Bigger - Errata

Post by Shy » Fri Aug 03, 2012 4:23 pm

I am using HOD for the first time this year. I am typing up the poems and Scriptures and laminating them to put on our
morning board. While typing 'The Ship that Sails,' I noticed several typos in it that actually changed the meaning.

So my question is, is there a page of errata so that I can go through and fix all the errors in the entire book before
beginning our school year?

Thanks,
Shy

Hi Shy,

I do know this issue has been brought up in the past about the poem you are referring to---assuming you are referring to the words "then" and "than".
It was noted, in an earlier post, that these are indeed typos in the guide. I looked on the "Updates" section of the HOD website and did not see any reference/correction to that specific poem.

For future reference, however, if you come across something that you think you might like to check on through the "Updates" section of the HOD website, here is a link to that page:
http://www.heartofdakota.com/updates.php

Also, if you want to reference the "Updates-PDF Replacements" page in the future, just go to the HOD homepage and click on the drop-down menu located in the upper right hand corner. Then, select "Updates-PDF Replacements". You will be able to view updates for all the guides there.

Thanks, Candace!

I did find the page you mentioned right after I sent that post. There is very little on that page though. So I wondered if there were more mistakes I should be aware of.

Hi Shy,

I don't think you need to worry about coming across other errors throughout the guide. It is quite uncommon to find any typos in the HOD guides, they are very well done.
I think with any publisher you have to expect typos to a certain extent, I think it is just impossible to catch everything.
Anyway, I think you are good to go---and welcome, by the way---I hope you enjoy your time with Bigger :D

Thanks, Candace!

Yes, I am used to mistakes in all the publishers I've ever used. It's not a problem as long as I know about them.

Thanks for the welcome and please share any advice you have. I am a 17 year veteran, but I have never bought
a prepared program before so, I am a bit nervous as well as excited. I've never spent this kind of money for a
school year before either so I also keep thinking, 'This better be a good as they say it is.' Haha.

I am revamping last year's morning board. It will have a place for the poems, the scriptures, vocabulary words,
and a ring with names of people we want to pray for. Can you think of anything else from Bigger that we might
want to include?

God bless,
Shy

Hi Shy,

Well, I am new to Bigger as well and have yet to organize it
You are way ahead of me :D

I found this post about getting ready for Bigger very helpful, you may have come across it already...
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5531

I think you will be very pleased with HOD. I think one of its many strengths is how engaging it truly is for children and how God-focused it is.
My daughter has made it very clear over and over that she wants HOD for her schooling. To me that says a lot about a program---when your child is personally requesting it. Oh, and her reasons for adoring it...because it has so much God in it and it is fun. And the bonus is that it is very academically solid. I think you are in for a treat.

I love your morning board idea, how very creative. I think *I* might have to hit *you* up for advice :D

I'm not certain when we will get started on Bigger, but you are welcome to come here to compare notes or you can PM me anytime if you like.

LOL, Candace. I don't know how to PM, but you can find me on Facebook as Sherry Cross Kelly.
I would love to be friends. I have joined the yahoo group for HOD also, but haven't seen any
posts come through yet.

I have seen that article you mentioned. I decided to go with one notebook with 8 tabs: Poetry,
Math, Reading Lists, Language Arts, History, Science, Vocabulary, and Latin. Latin is the only
addition to Bigger that we will have. I've made our Timeline and stapled it inside a plastic
folder.

My grandson is still using handwriting paper, so I went to donnayoung.org and printed out the
size he needs with the top of the page blank for drawing. So I guess his notebook is ready.

All I have left, I think, is finishing the morning board with the chore chart I made for him last
night and updating the Scriptures to the ones in Bigger. Can't decide which things from last year
to take off so I can add this year's items.

The chore chart I made has the days of the week across the top, the chores down the left side,
and inside the check off boxes, I wrote the number of minutes each chore earns him. Four
different chores give him 5 minutes each and doing his school work with a GOOD ATTITUDE
earns him 10 minutes, for a total of 30 minutes a day. He can choose how to spend those
minutes each day and his favorites are playing computer games, playing games on the Nook,
and watching cartoons.

I do not remember coming across any other typos in the guide. Your morning board sounds like a great idea!

This is what the board looks like now.

I am wanting to add his chore chart, but I made it a full size sheet.
Gotta decide how much of this we need to keep or take off. We really don't need the Vocabulary holder since
they will be in the notebook and we don't need the praise songs b/c we are are bookmarking them on youtube
and our spelling words are already in a file via All About Spelling. The temperature and weather were fun for
a few weeks, then he lost interest, so I may take them off also.

I might like to add the hymn of the week. I did not buy the tape, but plan to use my huge pile of hymn books
for the lyrics and listen to the music on youtube.

Just thought it might be a good idea to keep cards with the vocab words in this sleeve for the week anyway.
Remove when next weeks cards are ready.

Ideas?

Blessings,
Shy
I see the picture is not very clear. The upper left is the temperatures for each day of the week, upper right is
the weather for the day with velcro attachments for sunny, partly cloudy, cloudy, raining, etc. The upper middle
is a prayer, "Lord, help me to obey, with a good attitude, right away, all the way, every day." The 3 middle sleeves
in orange are vocabulary words, praise songs, and spelling words. The 3 across the bottom are Poetry, Today we
pray for, and Scripture Memory. HTH.

I must confess I am not at all creative. I got most of this online (wish I could remember where)
and tweaked it to fit our needs.

Shy,

Thanks for sharing all your organizational ideas---I've been taking notes :D
Your morning board is so creative and purposeful, I love the idea of having a central place for specific concepts.
Your Grandson has some fun learning ahead of him for sure.

I look forward to hearing how your year progresses with HOD :!:

PS~I would love to check-in with you on FB, but I don't use FB---I know I'd spend way too much time on there, lol.

Thanks, Candace!

Well the first 2 days went pretty well. We were just crammed for time b/c we slept late, lol.
Gotta get back in the groove, ya know.

Do you know if there is a way to get this board to send an email or something when someone
replies? I'm getting tired to going back and looking for my msg every day to check for replies.

Thanks!

I think there is a way to see your replies to your post. *I think*
Once your logged in, at the top of the screen click on "user control panel"
Then click on "board preferences"
Then on the left side click on "edit posting defaults"
Then the very last one click "yes" to "notify me upon replies by default"

I think this should do it. I don't know if it will be for just posts you've started or anytime someone replies to a post after you have. Guess we'll find out! HTH

Thanks Robbi! I also found how to see messages I am involved in without hunting
through the Main Board over and over again. This is most helpful.
