Beginning Wisely English for Bigger?

Post by laurelmarie » Sun Jun 24, 2012 7:56 am

My dd will be 8 when we start Bigger (January 2013). She has currently done FLL 1 and 2, WWE 1, BJU English 2, and Abeka Language 3. Should I put her in Beginning Wisely ? She can write great sentences and knows ending punctuation (commas still trip her up) She can pick out basic verbs, nouns, helpers and adjectives. We have done some basic diagramming. Also is the teacher book needed for Beginning Wisely?

I might go ahead and start her in beginning wisely but do it 2 lessons at a time, allowing her to complete exercises orally. You do not need the teacher manual for this level, but you do for the next. : )

Thank you.
I will be moving at her pace but am curious what would be the reason for going slow? Is it extremely advanced? A lot of work?

If you did it as written (which I DON'T recommend), it would be a LOT of written work. I think the reason for the pace is that Charlotte Mason believes in a slow introduction to Grammar.

I would think that if your daughter has completed all that you mentioned, she'd likely be ready for R&S 3---Beginning Wisely.
Or you could start with R&S 2---Preparing to Build---and just move through at a quicker pace. I would imagine R&S 2 would be quite a bit of review for your daughter, but that might be a good thing if you think it is needed.

I know on the HOD website, Carrie mentions that if your child has already completed an advanced grammar program such as Abeka, you can move up to R&S 3.
The teacher's manual for R&S 2 is not needed unless you desire an answer key or don't feel comfortable with your English skills.
The teacher's manual for R&S 3 is recommended as an answer key and as a lesson help.

It sounds like your dd is ready for R & S English 3, as she has completed Abeka 3. :D HOD recommends getting the teacher's manual for R & S English 3 on up, as the oral review questions are included only in the teacher's manual, and that is how dc review and retain terminology. :D HOD also recommends doing 2/3 of R & S English orally, reserving 1/3 of it or so for dc to write, as the writing can become heavy over the years otherwise. Completing R & S English 6 by the close of Grade 8 is the goal to shoot for, as R & S English 7 and 8 are high school credit worthy. So, you have some wiggle room for pacing. HTH! :D

Thanks all and very helpful.
I will go ahead with R&S 3 and just move at the pace she feels comfortable with. Will bigger have a schedule for this in the back or will I have to wing it?

Bigger Hearts has a schedule for R & S English 2. PHFHG has schedules for R & S English 3 and 4. So, for this year, you can either get the PHFHG guide for the R & S English 3 schedule or wing it. Next year, PHFHG will have the schedules you need either way. HTH! :D
