LHTH or ?

Post by hsmomma » Fri Jun 01, 2012 6:37 am

This fall I will have 3 older ones doing different things and a just boy turning 5 in October and a boy who turned 2 in July. I had planned on doing LHTH with them both, I have everything on my shelf now but I am wondering now if it might not be enough for my 5yo. I thoughts orginally were that at this age phonics instruction, formal math intro read alouds are the core so that should be plenty but will it be to easy for the 5yo. Not worried about the 2yo just thought having him tag along with LHTH would be a great bonus. What do you ladies think? This past year the soon to be 5yo tagged along with my 6yo doing MFW Kindy and I started 100EZ lessons with him last month he will probably be close to reading by September.

I think it depends on your kid. My daughter will be 5 in July and she's much more ready for formal instruction than my oldest was at this age. Maybe you could try it out, but if he's asking for more to do, then add in something else. I agree that math and reading are the core, but my girls are really excited about history, so I like using LHFHG for kindergarten because of that. I also like having the science a couple of days a week. You can also add in handwriting too and that will take some time, but 100EZ lessons incorporates that already (that is what we used too). If he's not ready for by-himself handwriting, there are lots of tracing only worksheets you can download online. I like those because they were less frustrating for my beginning writers.

So are the addition of history and science the big differences in thse two?

I feel like that's the main difference I think, plus scheduled math and phonics, which it sounds like you are already doing.
