Hello Again and Advice

Post by south5 » Tue May 29, 2012 6:20 pm

Hi, 2 years ago we used HOD. I did LHTH with my 2yo, LHFHG with my 6yo and Preparing with my 10yo.

I am looking at using LHFHG, Bigger and Rev to Rev this year.

My Questions are about Drawn into the Heart of REading. I own this from before but never quite figured it out. How do you schedule it? If the guide has it down for 3 days a week, what do you do with the book you are reading? Say, I plan to have him read the book over 10 days. Would you read on days not assigned in the Rev guide? Thanks!

Also, about placement. My youngest is truly advanced. I am not the kind to push, my middle child is just now reading at the end of 2nd grade. He wasn't ready before. But, she is reading CVC words and she can do copywork off the board perfectly. She finished Singapore Earlybird 2 this year, so she is ready to move on to 1st grade math. Do I place her in LHFHG or Beyond? I am worried about LHFHG being too light for her.

Thanks!

Hi there south5, and welcome back! :D We have used DITHOR for many, many years, and I can help answer your questions! As you mentioned, DITHOR is scheduled 3 days a week in the upper guides. You only do DITHOR on those days, so you would only have him read his DITHOR book on those days. You will get through 3 days' worth of plans each week with DITHOR when it is scheduled 3 days a week in your PHFHG guide. So, you'd do Days 1, 2, and 3 of DITHOR the first week. Days 4, 5, and 6 of DITHOR the second week. Days 7, 8, and 9 of DITHOR the third week, etc. So to answer your example question - if you choose to have him read a DITHOR book in 10 days, you'll get through it in a little over 3 weeks' worth of time (since you are doing 3 days' worth of DITHOR plans each week). :D

At the pace of doing DITHOR 3 times a week through PHFHG, you get through about 4-5 DITHOR genres within that year. The next year in CTC, you just pick up where you left off and finish DITHOR out, doing the remaining 4-5 genres. Does that help or confuse you more? DITHOR follows the same path each genre, so once you get your feet wet and have done 1 genre, they all will follow suit so nicely and easily. We have loved DITHOR - I can't wait for you to start! :D

I'm assuming you are talking about the 6 yo here, and I think she sounds ready for Beyond. I'd place her in Beyond and run with it! She sounds ready. Two of our sons did Beyond at 6 or 6 1/2 yo and flourished. They placed in Beyond squarely, and it was a perfect fit for them at that age. Now all that's left is to get to enjoying your year with HOD - HTH - and looking forward to sharing our HOD years with each other here on the board! :D
