New to HOD in FL with newbie ?s

Post by Gigi » Tue May 22, 2012 6:55 pm

Hello all! I have spent several weeks, maybe months reading all I can on this board. I decided to go with HOD a while back after assessing our current mix and match of stuff is not working out! I have a dd who is 7 and a ds who is 3. She will be starting 2nd grade in Beyond and my little guy LHTH! So excited to get to meet the staff at FPEA!! Anyone else here from central FL/Tampa/Brandon area??

We are currently using RighStart Math, it suit us well for K but not this year. I am afraid to jump into Singapore Math. I looked at a 1A Singapore workbook and textbook at a used bookstore and was totally confused. The textbook did not have any more information than the workbook so I was not sure of the difference between the two?? I read a lot of posts about Singapore and it seems most moms here stick to Singapore. I am willing to give it a try!

I currently use All About Spelling. It seems Carrie includes spelling lists with the guides, so there would not be a need for a separate spelling program right??

I have known about HOD for a couple of years but thought it would be more fun to piece my own curriculum together, well it was not this past year, so I am looking forward to start HOD!! What a blessing and a relief to this mama to have this resource to use!! Thanks to all at HOD!

Sorry for the long post...blessings!

Welcome to HOD, Gigi!

You are going to love having everything planned for you! This is coming from someone who left HOD for a brief time trying to piece together her own things for her kids only to realize how stressful it is. So we returned to HOD. :)

We switched from MUS to Singapore our first year of homeschooling and our first year with HOD a few years ago. I'm so glad we did. I am constantly amazed how much math my oldest two can do in their heads AND in everyday situations (which is the entire purpose for teaching math). :) I don't think you need the textbooks until 3A. Carrie has written great hands-on activities for 1A and 1B in the Beyond guide (2A & 2B in the Bigger guide).

There are two spelling list to choose from in the Beyond guide. Then in the Bigger guide your child will begin dictation. My son has only used HOD for spelling and does really well and we are almost halfway through Bigger.

Enjoy your convention! Carrie & Julie are so friendly & full of wonderful advice!

hi! I'm in Central Fl! Over around Clermont so about 1.5hrs from Tampa. I was born in Winter Garden and lived there for ten years and just moved back here after living in Arkansas for about 21 years. :) Glad to see another FL HODie!! this is our 7th year homeschooling coming up and 4th with HOD.
Singapore math is great. we also love right start for K. The workbooks for Singapore are all you need for levels 1-2 with HOD bc Carrie has written in the plans and activities for teaching each day. We came to Singapore pretty late and.couldn't mesh into.it so took a different route that teaches the Singapore methods still, but fit us better with the more traditional sequence. scope is the same though. Singapore with HOD in those early levels is a lot of fun. my younger ones would do it but we already have the other math for 1st-6th :)
spelling is coveted with two levels of lists starting in beyond. then bigger has that second list and the first level of studied dictation. so there's no need for a spelling program. studied dictation is great.

welcome to the boards too! loads of great help here. and you have to ignore my extra punctuation and lack of capitals at times bc I'm often on my phone ;)

Ditto what Mom2Monkeys and creativemommy said about the spelling and math, so nothing to add there.... Just wanted to say welcome to HOD. We just closed out our 3rd year with HOD, and looking forward to our 4th!

Welcome Gigi,
We are in Eustis Florida which is northwest of Orlando. We have used Singapore since 1st grade, even before we started HOD, and love it. We also really like the studied dictations Carrie has included in the guides. We're on our 3rd guide (Rev2Rev) and they truly do keep getting better and better.
Peace to all,
Karen

We switched to SIngapore when we switched to HOD and I tested my dc with the test to see where my dc fell on their placement HOD has a link on their website or you can just go to Singapore's website and look for placement tests. We started in the 1A & 1B even tho my dc is 2nd grader simply because we were knew to HOD and Singapore - we did work through it faster because he was grasping the concepts and are now into the 2a and 2b books - I just wish I would have gotten the bigger guide with Carrie's teaching activities to help me along LOL
