Rev to Rev (advanced) Science-schedule?

Post by holdinon » Sun Apr 29, 2012 5:54 pm

We will soon be moving in to Rev to Rev, and will be doing the advanced science.
In looking at the sample week, there are instructions for the advanced science to do on the 5th day. I don't have the RevtoRev guide yet or the books to judge, but I am wondering if both the day 4 work and day 5 work could be completed on the same day. I don't want to overwhelm dd, and science is her "thing" so I think it would be do-able, but not having it in front of me yet, I just don't know. She is working through the guides at 5 days per week, and we would like do continue that path if possible----at least for this year (8th grade) until we move to high school electives, which we may end up putting as a 5th day. But right now, our schedule is 5 days.

Her experience with RtR has been great. She does extensions and finishes each day in about 4.5 hours or so (never more than 5).

Has anyone done the 5th day along with the 4th? Or spread out the science a little differently to "fit" the 4 days per unit rather than 5?

Just asking....does your 4.5 hour schedule include the science and DITHOR.

Yes, it does. But I did just re-read my post and realized the way the sentence reads, it's slightly mis-leading. She finishes the day as written in the guide in 4.5 hours or so. But she does the extension readings and night, so that is not included in the time. She also reads storytime on her own, so that makes it go a bit faster than if I read aloud. And she also does English on her own. She reads the lesson herself and does one-half of each section. The only thing I do with English is ask her the oral review questions. Other than that, she just moves through it herself (unless she runs into a problem or misses things). So I think her English goes a bit faster that way, as well as her writing---she has usually done that own her own before our "meeting time". I have scheduled for us to do that together, but she will often go ahead and begin it, and unless she has a question, she typically has that completed (or at least started) before I get to her.

She has not always been such a diligent worker though---far from it  . I used to have to stay on top of her all....day....long to get her to stay on task  . But over the last year or so (and with the help of timers), she has come a LONG way.

It may be a full day, but it could be done. I think I'd give it a try and see how it goes! We did the standard version for RevtoRev's science and had a blast with it all year long! It was meaty, but if my ds was older, I think he would have gladly done more for the advanced version and thought it was great! It is such a terrific science program - Wyatt would have done it for his free time. :D

I have the advanced science, and the day 5 lessons are typically quite long (involves building a detailed project and/or doing a detailed experiment and writing up a lab sheet-when dd built the glider we had to take a "park day" to go out and fly it :D ). You might be able to do day 4 and 5 of advanced science in one day, if that was all you did on that one day.

My son usually spends a good chunk of his Friday just doing the science day 5 things. He sometimes because of things we have going on tries to at least get a good start on it Thursday evening or something, but to do it well, they do need that extra time.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

Thanks for the replies.
It sounds like it may just be time to move to a 4-day week. Now, to just figure out how that will look for us. Everyone else will still be working at a 5-day, but I'm sure we can make it work.

I'm sure this varies from family to family, but what do your dc do (besides science) on the 5th day when your other kids are on a 5 day schedule? Moving them to a 4-day schedule is not an option, for various reasons  --at least not yet. We don't do anything besides HOD other than a typing program; she could continue that on the 5th day, but other than that, I guess just free reading, art, etc. hmmmmmm......off to ponder this a while :D .

Angie,

If science is her "thing" it may be possible for her to her Day 5 on Saturdays. The Day 5 lessons are fairly involved, so then she could just take her time in doing it. If Saturdays are out, then you could move to a 4 day schedule and just leave her with a short day on Friday that only contains her Day 5 science. She may really enjoy that and could take the time to do it up big on that day. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

That 5th day would be a great day for her to just do the science and then be the chef for the day. (or something like that). She could make a menu for lunch and dinner beforehand and cook those two meals.
