Needing direction with R&S English in upper guides

Post by arstephia » Mon Mar 12, 2012 7:24 pm

We have been using R&S English since 2nd grade already, but dd didn't start HOD until 5th grade, in which she did the 5th grade English text. This year she is in CTC and using the 6th grade. I can see that she doesn't need such a rigorous program for next year, but I don't know how to place her. I would like the simplicity of her doing RTR and the English 5 as written, but that will take her back two grades to a book she'd have already done, but is that all bad?. Likewise she's done fine with the 6th grade text, but not so well that a repeat year would be an issue, but that isn't scheduled in RTR. What do you all (as well as Carrie) recommend I do?

Also, I have the same issue with my son who will be in 9th grade and using the new Missions to Marvels guide. He had finished 7th grade R&S last year so this year I took a year off from and and focused more on writing and did a daily grammar review program just to keep skills fresh because I wasn't sure where to place him for the same reasons. I guess my question then is what is scheduled in Missions to Marvels for a 9th grader? How should I place him? Go back to 7th grade, which again, wouldn't hurt especially since he's taken a year off from the R&S format or go into R&S 8th grade?

Advice?
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

I would keep moving. I would put your son in the 8th grade text and do half of it for 9th and half for 10th. Then you could just do something for 11th and 12th like Easy Grammar Ultimate (5-10 minutes a day) and concentrate on writing. With your daughter, did she finish R & S 6? If so, I would do 1/2 of 7 next year. If she only did the first half of 6, then do the second 1/2 of 6 next year. I would not repeat a book unless they had really struggled.
