Math in Bigger and Preparing

Post by Tracee » Fri Feb 10, 2012 10:25 am

Currently, we are in Beyond and using it for 2nd grade. Our school year goes from January to December, and we school all year long with some breaks in between. Right now, we are in unit 8, but in 1B of Singapore Math, so I just skip ahead a little in the guide and find the activity that corresponds to where we are in math. I'm looking ahead to the future and wondering if it would just be easier to stick with the guide as written. That would either mean, speeding up a bit or slowing down a bit. If we slow down, we could do 2A right along with the Bigger guide. If we speed up, I would just get the Bigger guide now and use it for the hands on activities, and then when we start using Bigger in January, I can use the plans for 3A. I'm assuming that the plans for Singapore 3A are in the Bigger guide also. If I continue the way we are going, our math is always 1/2 a guide off.

I'm really trying not to focus on grade level, but I'm struggling a bit. Does it sound right that we would do Bigger for 3rd grade and Singapore 2A or should we be in Singapore 3A when we do Bigger if we are doing it for 3rd grade.

Thanks,
Tracy

I think if your child is doing well at the current pace, there is no need to slow down or speed up the math :D And yes, there is a schedule for using 3A/3B in the appendix of Bigger, so when you need it it will be there. The next HOD guides up all have 3 levels of math scheduled in the appendix in an overlapping fashion to give you the freedom to move your child at the pace and level that is right for them in math-try not to do more than is sheduled for one day at a time, because then you lose the beauty of short lessons :D

Thanks Lourdes! You're right, I need to go at whatever pace is working with my ds. So really Bigger is the only guide that I will have to buy 1/2 a year early. From that point forward, I will have the plans in the guide. That makes me feel better. I think it would be too much to think we could get from 1B to 3A by the time we start Bigger next January. We will probably be starting 2B at that point which has been a good fit for ds this far.

Thanks,
