DITHOR determined by age or ability?

Post by rgrindle » Fri Feb 03, 2012 7:58 pm

For example, DITHOR 2. According to the master plan, would a child do that when they are doing 2nd grade work in math and language arts, or when their age says 2nd grade?

Dithor 2/3 is great to start with for a child at about 2nd or 3rd grade who is a good independent reader, past the stage of the emerging readers books. If an older child in 4th or perhaps even 5th grade has not done much literature study, one can still use the 2/3 workbook while choosing reading material that is appropriate for that child. There is a bit more "hand-holding" at the 2/3 level, and the workbooks progressively lead the child to do more independent work while still having "check-in's" and discussions with the teacher (mom) :D

DITHOR is first an option in Beyond Little Hearts, and then continues to be a reading option all the way through the modern times guide. :D The youngest age recommended for beginning DITHOR is 7 yo. Lourdes gave an excellent answer here already. :D I'll just agree with her good counsel, and add that I'd consider it more a matter of ability than age, as ability drives when dc are finished with the phonics and emerging reader's stage of reading, and therefore ready to begin DITHOR, though on the flip side, most dc by second or third grade are ready to begin DITHOR. :D Writing is also a part of DITHOR, so this is something to consider when determining when to begin as well. We've used DITHOR for ages 7 - going on 13 so far, and been pleased with the growth each year! :D It's my favorite way to teach reading. :)
