The first 3 chapters of CHOW are not done. Also there is a schedule in the appendix for the extension readings.

Ditto to Lynn's answers - also, the extension package schedule is mapped out to match the "Unit, Day" of the plans. Follow-ups are suggested. :D HTH!

So the main books are listed in the body of the guide, then I would have to flip over to the appendix for the other books, then to a separate guide for the Drawn into the Heart of Reading. Do I have that right.

I am wanting to love this program, but I am not liking the looks of the sample guide so I want to make sure I know exactly how it works before committing. Thank you for your help.

It is soooo hard to make decisions regarding curriculum, isn't it? I remember a number of years ago when I was debating whether I should use the program I had used the year before or go with HOD. I agonized! I'm so glad I went with HOD. We are on our fourth year and using our fifth program. I used Preparing last year with my ds, and it was wonderful! It was one of my favorite years! Grandpa's Box was awesome! I learned so much last year alongside my ds. It was a wonderful sweep through history and really whetted our appetites for the deeper studies to come. I have always had to use the appendix because my ds is ahead of the guide in math. Plus, you have to refer to it for the weekly poems and other things. I found it to be very helpful to use the Post-It note tab dividers and just label them. It is easy-peasy to flip back for what I need. The daily plan layout is great. Just check the box as you do it. No annoying cross-outs and arrows with the weekly charts.

Anyway, just a few thoughts on the matter. Have fun searching!

Lassielou,
Hello! :D I just wanted to say that yes you are correct that you would be using two seperate guides for the Preparing manual and then the Drawn into the Heart of Reading manual. Then you would be turning to the index in the back of the Preparing manual for extensions and also for dictation and possibly a math schedule... I know that seems like a lot but it really runs so smoothly.

One way that I cut down on the flipping back and forth is I make copies of the extension schedule and put it into a folder inside of a page protector for my older student. He reads the schedule on his own and then checks it off as he finishes. I know he is doing fine keeping up on his own because he is required each day to bring me an oral or written narration, or a note-booking page on the reading he has done. I have found it is easy for us to keep up with this by making a note on the extension schedule copy similar to this:

Unit 1
Day 1: Uncovering the Mysterious Wooly Mammoth: Life at the end of the great Ice Age -(I hand write in-oral narration)
p.6-7 and p.44
Day 2: Reading lesson and pages listed as above...................... (written narration)
Day 3: ....................................................................... (Note-booking page)
Day 4: ....................................................................... (written narration)

One other way that helps cut down on the flipping is that I make a 2 photocopies of each poem in the index (one for each boy doing Preparing), and also for each childs dictation for them to keep in their own folders. If this is not clear or you want me to explain a little better then I would be glad to do that! :D

I also use sticky tab index post-its... I mark the current day that we are working on, then written narration (so I can flip here for tips), narration(also for a quick reference while the child is orally narrating to me), dictation, and math schedule.

It really sounds like a lot, but I have found HOD to be WAY easier to use than any curriculum I have used in the past! It is so easy to use, and extremely well planned and thought out! If you have any other questions that would help you better grasp it, ask away! These ladies are so wonderful. I remeber before we switched to hOD, it was very hard to really picture it and how things would work. I am so pleased with EVERY aspect of it and thankful that we did make the switch!

Thanks ladies! I appreciate your help. I wish I could get my hands on a guide :)

My favorite guide, so far, is Sonlight, with Winter Promise a close second.

I think I will ask around here locally and see if I can see one in real life before I make a decision.

Thanks again!

No questions are silly! CHOW stands for Child's History of the World and it is used in Preparing guide as one of the main history books along with the book Grandpa's Box.
