cirriculum choice

Post by Tiffy74 » Sat Jan 21, 2012 11:53 am

I have 4 kids and will be starting HOD in the Fall. My 6 y/o will be doing BLHFHG, but I want to combine my 8 and 10 y/o and am having trouble deciding which way to go. I want to challenge my 10 y/o without be too much of a challenge for the 8 y/o. I am wavering between BHFHG with the extension pack and PHFHG. Anyone have any advice for me?

Welcome to the HOD Boards! :D We're glad to have you here. All new posts begin on the Main Board, so I'll move your posts over there where more moms will see it.

It will really help us advise you so much better if you get a chance to share where your 8 and 10 year olds each fit on the first page only of the placement chart linked here. Link: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php

Then, we'd love to help you! 8)

Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks for the link! I would say my 8 year old fits in the BHFHG and my 10 fits best in the PHFHG. I am really hoping to combine the 2 of them so I won't have to be doing 3 separate programs.

You could easily combine the 8 and 10 yo in BHFHG, adding the Extension package for your 10 yo to raise the level of History and Science. You would of course be using whatever level grammar and math is appropriate for the each child-Rod and Staff 3 is a good start if your older child hasn't had much formal grammar, while your younger probably would use Rod and Staff 2-if they have had a lot of formal grammar, you could go with 3 and 4. For Singapore math, if they are new to that and you wish to use it, go to the Singapore website for the free placement tests. Administer them individually and offering no asssitance to make sure you start each child at the appropriate level of Singapore-it is unique and pretty advanced.

Welcome to the board, Tiffy74! :D Thanks for sharing the placement you decided best via the placement chart. I think I'd do BHFHG with extensions for the oldest. BHFHG is a meaty program, so it will be a good fit for your 10 yo, and your 8 yo already placed there, so you know it's a good fit for him. I think you will enjoy Beyond and BHFHG so much! I'm so glad you are doing Beyond with your 6 yo. The only advice I have is to caution you not to be tempted to throw the 6 yo in with the duo in Bigger Hearts at any point, nor to have the 6 yo (then 7 yo) try to do PHFHG the following year. It will be easier, more successful, and more enjoyable for all for you to do Beyond with the 6 yo and BHFHG with extensions with your 8 and 10 yo. One other thought- if you get going and decide BHFHG is too difficult for the eight yo, you could always have the 8 yo join the 6 yo in Beyond and have your 10 yo do PHFHG. Come to think of it - that would work now too, if that's a better fit, but you'll know best! :D Both are good options. Enjoy HOD - we sure have for 8 years and counting! :D

Thanks so much for the advice. I am really looking forward to starting HOD this Fall! I really like that everything is right there for the parent and there is little to no prep. Now that I have three doing school it will be so much nicer to have less parent prep time. I really appreciate the discussion board and will probably be taking advantage of it more and more.

I hope you have a wonderful start, Tiffy74! :D I too have loved the no prep convenience of HOD. It will be so nice to get to know you on the board. This is a board full of wise, Christian, encouraging ladies. I'm glad you are going to be a part of it! :D
