DITHOR - it was a GREAT day at our Mystery Cafe!

Post by Shimmer » Fri Jan 13, 2012 1:25 pm

I love all the genre kick-off ideas in DITHOR. I was totally excited about doing a mystery lunch when I read the idea. This has to be the coolest thing we've done yet! The idea is for them to "order" items for each course without knowing what food they'll get. Too fun!

I dressed up in costume. I had to keep it simple as it just occurred to me this morning to do it. I put on an apron and a very jaunty hat and spoke in an accent to be their waitress. I put out a fancy table cloth and used the china.

There is a sample menu in the book. I had 3 choices per course and it was fun thinking up names that were kinda related, but ones they probably wouldn't know what the food was. I ended up serving the side & entree courses together so I could sit down and feed the baby a bit. Here is what I came up with:

Course 1 - Drinks
The Original Bovine Blessing (white milk)
Bovine Blessing Blush (strawberry milk)
Boving Blessing Drug-Through-the-Mud (chocolate milk)

Course 2 - Appetizers
Crunchy Munchy (tortilla chips with melted cheese)
Flat Tires (melted cheese on Ritz)
Here's Blood in your eye (tomato soup)

Course 3 - Side
Basket Upset (fruit coctail)
Spears of Champions (broccoli and ranch)
Johnny A's Favorite Nibble (apple slices)

Course 4 - Entree
Moo for You (leftover hamburgers)
Spectaular Spirals (tortilla wraps with ham & cheese cut up)
Spuds & Cuds (beef and potato soup)

Course 4 - Dessert
Dropped in a Cloud (chocolate pudding topped with cool whip)
Campfire Delight (graham crackers, mini marshmellows, and chocolate chips)
Layered Loveliness (fruit and yogurt parfait)

The girls and I LOVED it. I had so much fun planning it. I'm not great at playing around, but for some reason, this idea just struck my fancy and I had a blast! I'm already planning it's return for the Mystery genre next year. It's going to be even more fabulous!

Carrie, thank you so much for all the hard work you put into making such an educational and FUN curriculum!

This is a hoot - what fun! Wish I'd been there! :D I loved the names you came up with for your mystery foods. They were so creative and fun!

Funny you say this - I've found the same thing. DITHOR projects are so varied, and there are many choices adding in the Godly Character traits projects, the Book Projects book projects, and the Group Projects, I can usually find one that clicks well for us. I'm not great at playing around either, but there is usually something that tickles my fancy (or my dc's!). We have had a blast with DITHOR's end of the unit projects. Now you've got me looking forward to doing my own mystery cafe with DITHOR soon, and I'll definitely be dressing up. :D Thanks for letting us share in the fun!

Shimmer,

It sounds like you had a terrific kick-off! :D I would have loved to be there. What a fun mystery lunch you had. :D Those moments are wonderful to store away in our hearts as terrific memories of our time homeschooling our kiddos! Thanks so much for sharing. I enjoyed the names you thought up for each of your foods. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

What a blast!! We did a mystery lunch too and had SO much fun! Then my daughter just HAD to write out a mystery menu for Daddy for dinner. She did a great job! Some of our favorite items were:

Curly-Q Oink Oink (spiral pasta, cheese and ham)
Sunny Bawk Bawk (orange chicken)
Crunchy Swimmers (goldfish crackers)
Vitamin C Bakies (chocolate chip cookies...we have a joke about Chocolate being the real Vitamin "C")

Thanks for sharing your menu!

What a fun, fun sounding activity you have had with the kids. We will have to keep this in mind, next time mystery comes around and when I have more than 1 child doing DITHOR! :D :D
