R&S off schedule a bit......

Post by SMiles » Tue Dec 27, 2011 2:04 am

We are either behind or ahead on R&S depending on how you look at it. Ds is on Unit 8 of RTR and we are on the last few lessons of english 4. Since he is 7th grade, I know we have the next approx. 2 years to complete books 5 & 6. We have used R&S since the beginning and ds has a pretty good grasp of the material. There are times when he doesn't remember something or we have to review some term. We do 98% of it orally and sometimes 100%. So I wanted to come on here and ask for advice on what to do.

#1) Should I just not worry about it and keep going according to the guide (by this I mean doing an english lesson when the guide says to no matter what the lesson number)? This would cause us to get done a bit later than 8th grade, I think.

#2) Should I double up on some lessons? I think we could do this because we do most of the lesson orally. The day seems to be long anyway because ds is slower on transitions from one box to another. We are working on this.

#3) Should I move him to the level of the guide? This would entail skipping a lot and I am not really comfortable with that although I know a lot of it is review. This would be almost to lesson 80 in the level 5 book which we will start next week, I think.

Thanks for any input and advice. :)

We are never at the same pace on math or LA with the guides, and it is always fine. I would say not to worry about staying on track with the guide too much. Just do each day's work and eventually you will get it done. We always seem to...somehow! God's grace! :D :D

I'd say #1 as well! :D R & S English is not one to try to double up on - it's so wonderfully thorough that one lesson at a time is enough. By doing a lesson when it comes up in the plans, you are maintaining that appropriate balance of LA skills planned within each day, so I'd just keep on going 1 lesson at a time. Some dc will complete R & S English all the way through level 8, and some will not. Grammar is actually not even required in high school. Both Levels 7 and 8 are considered high school credit worthy, so if ds graduates making it through just level 7, or half of level 8, that will be just fine - much, much more grammar than the majority of high school students in America are receiving. HTH! :D

Thanks for the advice, tnahid and Julie!

I will continue with choice #1 and go from there.
