One thing I'm not sure of after reading your post is his writing ability, but given what you have shared I would lean towards Preparing with DITHOR. He will need to be able to copy fairly long passages and also write creatively, with guidance. You do read Hero Tales which has missionary stories, but it is pretty gentle. The books used in Preparing should give him more things to think about and discuss with you. The follow up activities are more advanced also. The combination of CHOW and Grandpa's Box really is wonderful and will give an overview of World History and why our world needs a Savior. These are done as a read aloud so if anything might be a little overwhelming you could edit as you read. Carrie gives warnings in the guide if anything in CHOW might be too much for sensitive children.
