How are all you fellow HODies using Igniting Your Writing?

Post by water2wine » Thu Apr 24, 2008 4:59 pm

Just wondering what others are using Igniting Your Writing? I am looking it over and it seems pretty open and go just want to make sure I am not missing something and see if there are words of wisdom. I am also rethinking what level to use. So here goes...

-How often are you using it? Would one part a week (meaning one of the 4 related lessons in a section) be a good pace?

- Also I bought both guides, which I will use. But I am wondering if maybe I should start all my 4th and 6th grader in the first level and have the 6th grader do the advanced the first time around. But then just wondering if the second guide will still be OK to use in 7th grade level for her.

It looks great and I am excited to use it I always just have to think things out first. And when you are set on HOD for the next several years all you really can do is agonize over the little details.

W2W, you crack me up! :D I so relate to you - agonize over the little things if you don't have anything major to figure out!

I use IYW off and on. My 10 yo dd likes it a lot. We are using the 1st level. When I use it, I do use it about once a week. And then we don't use it for awhile and just pick up later. Probably not the optimal way to use it, but it works or us - for now.

Well it's not like you can just be settled! Seriously. I was even looking at things I could link to Preparing...um a year from now. Although I did find a pretty cool armor of God study to link to the first week hahaha! My dh said to me the other day "So I think I get it. The searching thing doesn't end just because you find something." Yes that's right, you have it now.

Seriously, thanks! I am thinking combining everyone on the same guide on different levels would be a little easier this first pass. I just wanted to make sure it was enough...famous last words.

I am currently using the first book for my 6th and 8th graders. We do this book on Wednesdays and I started on the first lesson and we read it together and they work through the Start and Intermediate portions of the lesson. I do a few other things for writing/grammar but they are on different days. I love Ignite and the kids are enjoying and not complaining. They are actually writing and I've definitely seen a great improvement. I had planned on starting book 2 this year but life happens so I'll move on with that book with my then 7th grader and these books are definitely in the "save for the younger ones" pile.

Heidi,

Thank you. That is perfect. I am going to use the first book and combine them at their level. If it works with an 8th grader it will work with my 6th grader. She reads all the time but writing is a little weak. So I was thinking not only would it be easier but I did not want her to miss anything. I could see her doing the other book but I am thinking the more instruction we get the better. I was surprised at having so much flexibility in the guide. But I am glad we have them both because now we know where we are heading and I have that covered. 8)

Thanks!

water2wine,

The ladies have helped you so well! I'll just chime in to say that the first volume of Igniting Your Writing is considered to be descriptive writing, so it's a great place to start (even with older kiddos). I do think, it would be well worth your time to put your older kiddos through Volume I first and then move them together into volume II (which emphasizes expository, narrative, and persuasive writing). Volume II also assumes kiddos have had a good exposure to descriptive writing prior to doing Volume II. :D

Many moms use Igniting Your Writing once a week for a year, or alternate it with Drawn into the Heart ... by days or even by month.

Blessings,
Carrie
