CTC- unit 7 day 1...problem with clay???help!

Post by 4arrows » Tue Oct 25, 2011 10:38 pm

Hi just wondering if anyone had success or problems with the history project for CTC Unit 7 Day 1 history project- the air dry clay???
My daughter tried to make it and it was very gooey and definitely not able to roll into gems. We tried adding more of this and that but to no avail. Does anyone have any other recipes we could use to make air dry clay for gems for the breastplate? Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if it is because we used arrowroot powder intstead of cornstarch. I always substitute this in recipes, but maybe for this project it won't work?? I don't have cornstarch :(
Any suggestions?
Thanks so much!
Elizabeth

We had to use purchased clay for ours. Our homemade clays have never worked over the years no matter what recipe the teacher guide uses. I just always have a stash of air dry clay in the cupboard for these activities.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

We used gel toothpaste and gel doesn't harden like regular toothpaste. Could that be it?

We used paste toothpaste and regular cornstarch, and it worked out fine. I think we did end up adding extra cornstarch, but it's been a few years so I could be off on that. There is a picture of it on p. 16 and p. 18 at this link, in case that is helpful...

We've found that with any craft recipe, the results can vary a bit (or even a lot!) depending on the type of ingredients used in the craft "recipe", the climate where you live, the altitude where you live, and the amount of humidity in the air on the particular day you're making the recipe. The brand of ingredients may also cause a different texture, etc. So, with any of the recipes used for craft dough in our guides, you can usually solve any inconsistencies in texture simply by adding dry corn starch or flour (whichever one was in the original recipe) and kneading to the desired consistency. :D It's best to only add the cornstarch or flour 1/2 - 1 teaspoon at a time if needed to thicken. Using a substitute for any of the ingredients will definitely make a difference in the consistency. So, you may wish to purchase some corn starch to have on hand for future clay recipes.

We've also found that when things like this happen, it is a great teachable moment to talk to our kiddos about how recipes do not always turn out exactly as planned and also to discuss possibilities about what could be done to solve any issues. :D While you can easily use store bought clay for upcoming projects, before you bypass the upcoming recipes for dough/clay in the guides I will share that we have found that our boys have learned much about how to follow recipes and about what to add if needed to get a desired consistency for the clays in the guide. It has taught them so much about making things from scratch and what to do when things don't turn out as planned! I think of this as a life skill. Our goal for the projects within HOD are that they be as much about the process as the product! :D

We hope that you will enjoy your time in CTC as much as we have with our own kiddos and that it will draw your children ever closer to the Lord! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
