Question about program selection
Question about program selection
I am new to HOD and I have never joined any forum before so I don't know if I am posting this in the correct place. I was interested in CTC for a 9th grader with the additions suggested on this forum. I was going to use Apologia's Physical Science (meh) until I saw Exploration Education in the RevtoRev program. Can Exploration Education Science be used with the CTC program and do I use all of the books in the RevtoRev science add-on? Thank you.

Re: Question about program selection
I have an 8th grader using rev to rev with the advanced science and it is challenging and fun
Is there a particular reason you wish to use CTC rather than rev to rev? Rev to rev with extensions and the option 2 science is already high school credit worthy without additions. Did your child place in CTC on the placement chart? Correct placement is the key to success and enjoymnent with Heart of Dakota

Re: Question about program selection
I think CTC is the correct placement. I've gone through the placement guide again, printed the week sample, and looked at the book selections. CTC seems to be challenging and the HOD programs seem to work sequentially through skill levels with particular regard to reading, comprehension, and writing abilities. We've switched curriculum so many times trying to find "the One", and that has left a lot of gaps in a lot of areas. I didn't want to miss the systematic instruction that seems to be built into the entire CTC program. I don't really know though, because the board discussions say there is a lot more to the guides than just what is shown on the samples. When I saw the different posts about making CTC high school credit worthy I thought this would be a good place to start. Now I feel confused again.

Hi Lee, didn't mean to cause confusion! If CTC is where your child placed, then that is what you ought to uselee wrote:I think CTC is the correct placement. Welcome to the HOD Board, Lee!
Lourdes did a good job of helping you be sure about placement, and now you are set! You know CTC is the right fit, and now you just need to figure out what areas you want to beef up for high school. You are right - CTC is a meaty program, and some families are using it for high school and enjoying that very much.
Here is a thread where Marsha describes how she is beefing up CTC for her ninth grader...

HTH! I think you will love CTC - it is such a rich program. I will never view the ancients time period the same again!

Re: Question about program selection
lee,
The ladies are doing a great job of helping you.
I'll just pop-in to address your question about using Rev2Rev's science with CTC. You could definitely do that if you were planning to do physical science this year.
In order to do so, you would need to purchase the Advanced Version of the Exploration Education curriculum. Since your child is only a 9th grader, you could decide whether or not you also wanted the Inventor part of the study along with the EE. If you did desire to do the Inventor Study too, then you would need to purchase the Rev2Rev guide, the whole science package for Rev2Rev, and the Inventor Student Notebook. If you decided not to the inventor study and just to do the EE with CTC, then you wouldn't need to purchase the Rev2Rev guide or Inventor set or Inventor Student Notebook. EE is enough for high school credit on its own for physical science, but you would then be missing the living books part of the science.
Either way will honestly work for your needs.
We pray you will enjoy CTC as much as we have with our own boys. If you have other questions, ask away! We're glad to help!
Blessings,
Carrie
