Hi! new and have some questions...

Post by Laura O. » Tue Oct 11, 2011 9:36 am

Hi :D I found HOD when I was researching new homeschooling curricula, and I have some questions. I am currently homeschooling my 3 oldest (10y dd, 8y ds, and 5y ds, my youngest is 2). I have been homeschooling all of them from kindergarten. I have been using Covenant Home's curriculum, but am thinking of changing for several reasons, not the least of which is the difficulty of teaching 3 levels at once. I am also wanting to find something to help them "enjoy" school more. Anyway, I was wondering if it would hard to switch with dd so far along? Has anyone done that? Also, do you find it easier to teach different grades at once with Heart of Dakota?

Thank so much for you help! I know I have a lot more questions, but I'll start with these  :D Also any other advice for starting and ordering HOD would be very much appreciated :)

Hello and Welcome! Last year was my first year with HOD and I had one in prek, one in second and one in third. It was not a difficult transition. It was actually a relief. That said, I do combine my older two in one guide and plan to do the same with my younger two who are only 15 months apart. This way I'll only be using two guides at any given time. So, first check out the placement chart and let us know where your dc place and then you'll get more useful advice. Blessings
Edited to add: My girls definitely enjoy school a heap more now that we use HOD and so does MOMMY! It is so neat to see them excited about learning.

Hi Laura, and welcome to the HOD Board! :D My dc are 11, 8, and 4, so we have somewhat of a similar family makeup. :D We are doing 3 guides, and I find it very manageable. We love our days with HOD! I have taught for 16 years (7 in ps, and 9 homeschooling), and HOD's guides have been the most teacher-friendly, and child-friendly, guides I have ever used. :D I think when everyone is properly placed, the day just goes very smoothly, so as you are considering where to place your dc, be sure you check out the placement chart here...
http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php

It helps to print out the first page of the placement chart, one copy for each child, and just circle where they each fall in each column. Then, if you can share that info with us here, we can all chat about placement options that would fit your family, and we'll keep chatting until you find a good fit! :D

Here is a thread about larger families using HOD that may be interesting to read...

You may also enjoy reading this thread, where moms shared what they enjoy about HOD the most...
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8268&p=60839#p60839

In the meantime, you may enjoy paging through some HOD Photobooks to see what your dc will get to do within HOD...

HTH, and we all look forward to chatting with you about your dear family and getting to know you here! :D

Thank you so much for your welcome :) And thanks for all the links, I haven't made it through all of them yet!
I printed out went of the Placement chart. There were several that I wasn't sure which section they exactly fit in :? But, I think that this is how they all fit in:

DD10---Creation to Christ
DS8---- Bigger Hearts for His Glory
DS5---- Little Hearts for His Glory

I didn't want it to be too hard for any of them, so I was kind of going with the lower side for each of them. Does this seem reasonable?
Also, I remembered another thing I was wondering about :) While my oldest *loves* to read, my 8 year old is not very into reading at all, though of course he can read. Has anyone had trouble with "non-readers" having a hard time with HOD?

Thanks again for your help :D

I want my kids to be on the older side when they do the upper guides. I did LHFHG last year with my 5yo K son and it was great and he did great but this year with Beyond he is doing fine but I am slowing it down a little because he just can't handle all the activities in one day.

I'm glad you were able to check out the placement chart. It is so helpful! :D It is quite common for dc coming into HOD to place in a guide where they are in the upper age range. I think this works out well, as it allows them to grow into the guide and lays a strong foundation in many skill areas that may be newer to them. HOD is a very balanced curriculum and teaches skills incrementally from year to year, so it makes good sense to come into a guide at the point where a child needs instruction for a set of skills. :D

In Bigger Hearts, you will be doing the reading for all subject areas, except for reading instruction. He will either read the Emerging Reader's Set or Drawn into the Heart of Reading Level 2/3 for his reading instruction. Here is a link to each of those, so you can see which would fit him the best...
http://www.heartofdakota.com/emerging-reader.php
http://www.heartofdakota.com/drawn-into-optional.php

Bigger Hearts has a fair share of writing that dc grow into. It takes a bit for dc to strengthen these skills. Beyond Little Hearts has less writing than Bigger Hearts, and Beyond would also be a fine placement for your 8 yo. Here is a rundown of the writing in Bigger Hearts...
Bigger Hearts:
Copywork of the poem (1 per week)
a Cursive program (daily)
R & S grammar (we wrote about 1/3 of it, doing the other portion orally, or on markerboard; daily; about 1/2 a page skipping lines)
Dictation OR spelling words (daily)
DITHOR Student Book (Level 2/3, approximately 2-3 workbook pages a week)
Science Notebooking (1 per week; approximately 2-4 sentences)
History Notebooking (1 per week; approximately 2-4 sentences)
Science Lab report (1 paper, 1 per week, not much writing - maybe 3-5 sentences with picture)
1-3 vocab. cards for history (1 time a week)
Bible Memory Verse copied (1 time a week)

For your 10 yo, CTC has quite meaty readings. Here is a link to what I think is one of the harder history resources dc read independently from in CTC - you may want to have your oldest try reading it...
http://www.nothingnewpress.com/guerber/ancient26-27.pdf

CTC is also quite independent. All of the "I" boxes in the daily plans are meant to be done totally independently by the student. I think it makes a big difference how well dc read directions and whether they have learned the skills to be able to work well independently. You may want to double-check if your 10 yo can do the "I" boxes independently. It is also helpful for dc to have experience with CM skills of oral narration and written narration when doing CTC as well. I'm hoping these few things will help you further with placement decisions. :D

I am just wanting to be very sure about placement for each of your dc, as teaching multiple guides is not hard to do as long as dc can do what they are asked to do in a guide. If a mom has to take back skills that are labeled "I" because a child is not ready to do them independently, the mom's teaching time naturally goes up, as does the time it takes to complete a day's worth of school for the child. I just want to be doubly sure about placement advice here, as days go so well when dc are able to do what is asked of them, and moms just are teaching the parts they are meant to be teaching. :D

One thing you could possibly do is have your 8 and 10 yo do "Bigger Hearts..." together, but have your 10 yo do the extensions. I only throw this out there as it would work with their age levels, and it is kind of nice to begin with 2 HOD programs if you are new to HOD. However, you are an experienced homeschooling mom, and you have been used to teaching multiple programs, and HOD is (IMHO) one of the easiest curriculums to teach using multiple guides. Sooooo, you will most certainly know best here. HTH!

I agree with Julie on combining the first year especially when you are new to HOD and this approach. It is WONDERFUL but takes some adjustment. I combine my 8 and 10 year old sons. Last year they did Beyond together and this year they are doing Bigger with extensions for the oldest. It is working out very well for us! Just my thoughts for you.

Thanks so much everyone for all your advice :D It is SO helpful! And Julie, thanks so much for sharing about your break down of what your ds did, it was really helpful!! I am still taking in all this information and trying to make my decisions. DD is very good at doing things independently, reading and following directions. She loves reading and is reading all day long  DS is much more easily distracted and and needs to be "kept on track", if that makes sense :? :) I am fairly used to doing different grades by now, but I am hoping for the easiest/smoothest way to keep it up. I am kind of torn, I think, because I would like to combine both ds and dd if possible, but I am wondering if it will be challenge enough for dd...

I am going to look through all the wonderful links and information you all gave me again, and do some more thinking :)

Thanks again, I love how helpful everyone is here :D My family and I live in Japan (that is why I usually end up posting at opposite times from everyone else), and there aren't any other homeschooling families around. I am really looking forward to having some other mothers to talk to!!

Wow, Laura! That is so neat that you live in Japan? Are you a missionary there? Why are you living there? Just curious! Bless you!

We love living in Japan :) We are not missionaries, but my parents are, and that is why I moved here 20 years ago(!) My dh is actually Japanese. We met when I helped my mother teach English at his school    We live in Saitama, a little north of Tokyo. I've lived here most of my life, though, so everything here in Japan just seems pretty "normal" to me now.
