OT: Nature Walk?

Post by psreit » Thu Sep 22, 2011 1:59 pm

It has been hard for me to get out for walks since having the baby with us. Today, I finally said to dd that we would take a walk with the baby. I normally go by myself or with dd8 because we live on a hill and it is tough getting back up with a stroller. The weather has been a little unsettled with occasional showers. However, at this point the sun was shining and I needed exercise. I pushed the stroller with baby down the steep driveway. As we started down the road I said to dd, "Look at that dark cloud. I hope it doesn't rain." We were looking for wild flowers and talking about picking some on our way back. We were probably about a quarter mile from home when we started feeling some raindrops. I said, "It probably won't last long." We started home and as we walked it began to rain a little harder. We were hurrying then and about halfway back home it just poured. The baby needed carrying. DD8 was pushing the stroller and becoming quite upset. So, we went into a horse path our neighbor had made parallel to the road which took us up a steep grade just behind our house. I was carrying 20+lb baby in one arm and trying to pull the stroller up with the other in drenching rain. (And I had just visited the chiropractor on Monday) Needless to say, we didn't get our wild flowers and we all were soaked to the skin. But it ended in a laugh. And, it will be something exciting to tell dad when he gets home. :) Oh! As soon as we made it to the top of the hill just yards from our house, the rain stopped and the sun was out again. 8) Isn't knowing the Creator so exciting! :D

We haven't been going on any nature walks. And I don't have any excuses after all your obstacles! I will go ahead and make the decision RIGHT NOW to go for a walk tomorrow after school. :D I will report back. Maybe.

Your story has inspired me! Before my last dd was born I was very routine about walking every day with my girls. While recovering I just got out of the habit of walking. My girls have been asking a couple times a week to go for walks. They STILL remember how much we all enjoyed this time in the outdoors. I am going to quit putting it off and making excuses. Thanks

Great story! :D I walked outdoors this week too for the first time in a VERY long time!

On a sidenote, I wanted to let you know that in our next guide for modern times, we will be including a nature study complete with guidance on how to do nature journaling. We are very excited about this component of the next guide. We are also leaning toward including nature inspired poetry from three different famous poets, spending a "CM-style term" of 12 weeks on each poet. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Oh my goodness, I am so happy to hear this! :-) Nature study is probably my favorite part of the whole CM philosophy, I think it's wonderful you'll be including this! :-)

That's great, Carrie. :D I guess we wait for awhile to enjoy that benefit, but we will still enjoy the walks anytime. (Even in the rain):D

I'm so glad that you're excited about the nature journal coming in the Modern Times guide. We're pretty sure the new guide will be called Missions to Modern Marvels. I'll also link another tidbit we've shared about it so far. :D Link: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10366&p=75377

We'll be sharing more tidbits as the weeks advance, as we have a pretty good handle right now about how the guide will shape up! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Yay! I am praying I will get to use it with my dd who is in Rev to Rev now-she says she still wants public high school, but we shall see...maybe by the spring, when the books for the new guide are on the website, she will change her mind...or else I may be tempted to get it for ME :D

Loved your story and very excited to read this! :D We are going on a big 1 week nature walk. I am taking my kids camping next week. Never seem to get a nature walk in during school time too much. I am excited HOD is going to teach us that as well.

Your story was great, thanks for sharing. I hope you get to go out another time when the weather stays nice and you get to find those wildflowers! I have done just a handful of walks, and right now the weather is sooo perfect I really should be doing it more. I was going to try and find some trails nearby that have some wooded areas and aren't 30 minutes from my house!

Hooray for nature notebooking!

Melissa, I see you are due in March. I have another grandchild coming in March. :D I'll be thinking about you.
Yes, I plan to take some more walks before the cold weather comes. I'm not sure about getting wildflowers, but we will be able to enjoy the fall scenery. It's lovely in the mountains of PA. :D

Carrie, the upcoming nature journaling is so exciting! We'll be doing our own nature studies until then, as it is right up there after Bible, reading and math for us. :) Excited to see you'll be formally incorporating it.

We can't wait for it to cool down enough to take a walk. In AZ, we have been indoors with the AC on for the past 4 months and will hopefully be able to get outside by late October (it'll be down to the upper 80's by then)
