Half speed Little Hearts story time question

Post by abrightmom » Sat Aug 27, 2011 8:18 am

Does the story time drag out if running LHFHG half speed? Does the child struggle to stay with the story? How do you handle Little Hearts storytime if using the guide half speed? :D

I didn't do it 1/2 speed, but I can imagine the thing you might struggle with is losing track of where you are in the story. We did school just 4 days a week with LHFHG so there were often 1-2 days between when we had read a previous chapter and what we were doing that day. I would just go back to the previous chapter and say "what was happening with Reddy Fox the last time we read it?" I would help them with the answer of course. If there was a page we had done on that chapter I would bring that out to help them, or a picture in the book. This way I think you could keep the continuity of it going. Otherwise - the books are pretty short, I don't think it would drag out too much.

For the time we did LHFHG half-speed, I just kept the Storytime half-speed too, and I thought it worked fine. :D

We haven't done half speed exactly, but there were several months this past year that we did Little Hearts only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (which, I guess is actually about half speed---just not planned that way  ). It flowed fine for us, and the kids didn't seem to skip a beat from one reading to the next.

I am a little late with my response, but I did LHFHG 3 times a week last year because of co-op and other activities and I stopped for summer break in the middle of reading "Grandfather Frog". My ds knew exactly who and what the story was about when we picked back up three weeks ago. :D :D

Julie, what do you mean here? How did you do it/keep track of where you were? (bookmark would help, I guess)

No, that's ok! I am just discovering there are tons of ways to do things, and wanted to be clear... :) thank you, Julie!
