1st Day of RTR

Post by LynnH » Tue Aug 23, 2011 12:06 pm

It went pretty well. Math was a little rusty, but that is to be expected since we didn't do as much as I wanted to over the summer. The surprising hit was Looking at Pictures. He loved that activity. He also seemed to take to the style of the IEW writing. I think the formula approach will work well for him. Only one attitude issue and that is when he finished his reading in Peril and Peace and then had to orally narrate he wasn't happy, because he hadn't read it with enough attention. All he wanted to tell me was "it was about Paul." This has been an issue we have dealt with in the past. So I read some of it to him and gave an oral narration to remind him of how it should be done and then he reread some of it and did fine with the narration. Overall I was very pleased with how he met some of the new challenges like the Research postcard. When we were done he said it was a good day.

That's great, Lynn! Sounds like a good first day. :D My son enjoys Looking at Pictures too. He surprises me with how many details from the paintings that he can pick out and remember. A new issue we are having with oral narrations this year is referring to the people as "this guy" or "that guy" instead of using their names. I told him it will do no good to know all those stories if he can't tell me who they're about. I'm going to have to be vigilant about that. I suppose it's because the names are kind of hard. I let him know not to hesitate to ask if he needs help pronouncing a name while he's reading. :D

Glad you're getting a good start, Lynn! :D We've enjoyed "Looking at Pictures", too! And, we're really enjoying the Boyhood and Beyond study. In Unit 3, Grant especially liked the story about "shooting your chickens" while teaching boys to use their authority wisely. He's used that phrase several times now while talking about how he can come up with good ideas to help with his younger siblings.
Grant loves to narrate, and it's been a little tricky for him as we've jumped into RTR, too. Peril and Peace has a lot of big names and theories to remember! I'm sure that it will come as you move along in the year. :D
