Teaching Singapore in the older grades

Post by Mumkins » Mon Aug 22, 2011 2:59 pm

What's it like teaching Singapore in the older grades? I guess that would be my hesitation with SM. I was planning on a computer based math as I've got a lot of kids.

I don't have much experience with Singapore Math in the older grades. Our oldest is now in sixth grade. This is our third math program to use for him and I had a tough time deciding if I should switch math programs. Last year we tried a computer based math program, and I watched his understanding of math drop. He was always really good at math. Toward the end of the year, the cd somehow broke, but it was a blessing. I saw that he was not grasping the skills as he should be, and I went back to teaching him the lessons and his comprehension returned. I decided to give Singapore a try, and I am so thankful we did. I will admit that we are only in our second week of it, but my son is loving math again. That's enough for me. We started one book below what is recommended in HOD for his age, and he is determined to get to where he should be. He wants to do extra lessons to get caught up. I definitely recommend Singapore.
