Beyond: Is copywork enough for handwriting?

Post by NicoleJ » Sat Aug 13, 2011 11:56 pm

Hello,
I am thinking of using Beyond for my DD who will be 6 (we start school in Jan, she will be a few months off 6 then). She can form all of her letters and numbers with no problems, although not always so beautiful, but very '5-year-old standard'. Is copywork in Beyond going to be enough handwriting practice for her? Does anyone else supplement with a handwriting book?
Thanks!

I used the Getty & Dubay books until I felt he was ready for the poetry copywork. He is now just doing the copywork in Beyond and will begin the cursive Getty & Dubay book as scheduled in Bigger next year.

I think you will find the copywork will be plenty. When my son first started Beyond he did not complete all of the copywork and he was a good writer. I just divided the poem up evenly for the week for him.

I have my 6yo ds copy 1 line of the poem each day, so he generally copies one stanza for each unit, and illustrates that. He is very proud of his accomplishment by the end of the unit! His progress is slow but steady :)

My DS is 7 and had decent letter and number formation at the end of LHFHG. The poetry copywork he is doing in Beyond is truly amazing to see. In just 6 units, his handwriting has shown marked improvement. :D I give him an amount that should take him just a few minutes (5 or less) to complete - usually that's only a couple of lines. We never get a whole poem copied by the end of the unit but that's ok. He's doing great!! :D :D :D And he's happy with his work as well even though he grumbles about doing it.

So yes, the copywork is doing it's job well for us! :D :D

We are using A Reason for Handwriting A for a few months, and then switching over to the copywork. We will still be working on the poetry, also. The only reason I'm doing the handwriting with it is because we didn't do formal handwriting for K.
