I feel like a homeschool snob

Hi all!
Hope everyone had a great summer!! We did, and are starting with Preparing on Monday!

I have a big pet peeve - and it is being put to the test!! I can't stand when people use incorrect grammar when speaking and writing! I am not an expert by any means, but simple differences between don't and doesn't, ours and ares, using "ain't," etc. We live in a small town in the southwest and many people do not know the difference, public schooled AND homeschooled! It appalls me to hear and see in writing that even other homeschooler make these mistakes! We have a small homeschool community in our town that occaisionally meets for park days or field trips, and communicates activities on facebook. Everytime I hear or see a mistake I REALLY want to correct it!!

I know it would be rude, but this is one way homeschoolers get a bad rap. Of course it's not everyone, but it happens enough that I want to move to a "more civilized" place!

Any thoughts??

The one I hate is when saying a sentence like "we was going to the store"
Or using I when it should be me. Just because you say I doesn't make it right. KWIM
Like the sentence "Do you want to go to the store with George and I." You would do say "Do you want to go to the store with I" It's just not right. You would use me. It's not always I.

Ok back to your regularly scheduled lives. I know I make many mistakes and probably some that bug others I am sure but these are just the ones that bug me. LOL

I know just how you feel! I've been thinking the same thing lately!

I always see lots of incorrect uses of apostrophes, too--as in you don't need an apostrophe every time you add an "s" to a word.

And lately, it's been the to/too mix-up!

Spelling is getting worse now, too, which I think has to do with the texting boom. But, with homeschool moms, I also worry that others think poorly of us when our spelling is incorrect (especially words like "curriculum", which is what we use to teach them!)

I think spelling errors began to harm when spell check was created and now there is the crutch of grammar check. I actually heard on a movie recently, "there is no reason to learn how to spell because there will always be spell check." UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't judge my grammar on this now

I have a different point of view. My sister's brother-in-law (who happens to homeschool) goes so far as to correct adults in front of his children as an on the fly lesson. It is completely rude! I know you are not talking about that kind of thing but I wanted to point out the extreme.

Oh and my sister's sons are in public school and do you know that they don't even teach them to write anymore. They say there is no need because of texting and computers.

In this situation I would pray for the grace to have genuine thankfulness for the opportunity to humble myself.

Well, actually, that's pretty much a constant prayer because, thanks to my pride, those opportunities abound!

This is a wonderful verse: "Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight." Romans 12:16 (ESV)

I empathize with your weakness and am taking this as an opportunity to search my own heart while meditating on this verse today.

I want to encourage you to be kind, tenderhearted, gentle, and good (Ephesians 4:32, Galatians 5:22-23). A prideful or critical spirit will do more to hurt a homeschooler's image (and the cause of Christ) than poor grammar.

Those verses were the encouragement that I was looking for! Thank you both!!! I am writing them on a 3x5. I don't like being negative, it has been a lifelong struggle. One of my verses is ..."do everything without complaining..." I am still a work in progress!

Once, while teaching public school, I had to wrestle with the question of whether to tell the teacher next door that "Welcome to forth grade!" was incorrect.

It's certainly not just homeschoolers having trouble spelling (or mistyping). I'm particularly peeved by "peak" and "peek". Unless it's for public display, such as a banner, letter to the community, or the above mentioned door, I just let it go.

It's my responsibility to teach MY children. It is my privilege to make sure friends don't embarrass themselves on banners and fliers. It is not my responsibility to change the world's spelling ability.
