OT: Advice about Going to Learning Center or Remedial Help

Post by tnahid » Wed Aug 10, 2011 4:44 pm

I am contemplating taking my 10 year old son to have him tested at a learning center here in town just to see if he might have any learning difficulties or blocks, especially with math and reading comprehension. Do any of you have experiences with this? Do you recommend it as useful or not? I just feel that he doesn't retain information well and definitely has ADHD type tendencies.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have or experiences with this to share.

Well I have two that would be considered special needs has cerebral palsy and that does involve learning. The other is ADHD along with some other issues but has no learning issues per say. I would say my advice is if you are looking at ADHD then I would go for an evaluation with medical people for that. If you are talking about learning issues that can't be medically determined I think it can be helpful. I did get my dd with CP tested for learning issues etc and that was helpful but again I did that with medical professionals so I can't answer about learning centers. To me if I suspected something like say dyslexia or something like that I would go with someone like Children's Health Care (fill in your major city name) or Scottish Right or starting with a pediatrician if you are not sure where to go where you live or need a referral to get an evaluation for insurance so you could go to a place that deals with special needs for children. I think you will get a more thorough evaluation and treatment option with more professionally trained people. Having said that my dd with CP was also evaluated in the ps system and that was of no help nor was their treatment of her needs.

Praying your needs are met. :D
