Organizing storytime & DITHOR books

Post by krismoose » Tue Jul 26, 2011 7:02 pm

Hi,
There was a thread a while back that included organizing read-alouds and DITHOR books with stickers or labels...someone out there has good system for keeping track of the different genres and levels...I only have 3 sets of Beyond read-alouds and a bunch of level 2 DITHOR, and I'm already feeling swamped  Can someone share their system? Thanks

I bought a set of file folder labels that are white with a strip of color on them. I cut the labels into thirds and then wrap each piece around the bottom end of a book's spine. I color coordinate the labels with the manuals. For instance, I use the labels with red stripes for all LHFHG books, dark blue stripes for all BLHFHG books, yellow stripes for all BHFHG books, light blue stripes for all PHFHG books, green stripes for all DITHOR books, etc.. I further label each manual's books by marking on the label: blank for core books, R for read-alouds, X for extension books, etc. For DITHOR, I mark the level of the books (2, 3, 4/5, etc.). I've considered being more specific, such as RG for Read Aloud Girl or RC for Read Aloud Classic, but for right now it hasn't been necessary.

I found round stickers that are white with a band of color around the edge. For DITHOR I wrote the genre and level. So it says Adventure 2 on the spine for example. For read alouds I put the genre and the unit #s we'll be reading it. So Humor 25-28 on its spine. Extension books have an X with the units as well. Science and History books have just a S or H on them. I didn't label their English books because those can vary a bit between guides and future children.

After stickering the spines I laminate the books with contact paper. I'm so glad I did! At our 2nd day my toddler got something sticky on the manual and it wiped clean. One of our other books got messy and my baby grabbed the cover of the manual and it would have creased the cover. That was just the first week! My little ones are at the destruction age!
