New and need some affirmation
New and need some affirmation
Good Afternoon Everyone,
I read about HOD on a website on Friday or Saturday, and have been fascinated ever since. Much of my free time has been spent going through the archives and looking over the sample lessons and book lists. I've pretty much decided that this will be what we will be using for my ds (6yo in Oct) next year. I'm so definite that this is the way to go that everything is already in my shopping cart Just need to pray about it a bit more.
As I've poked around the site, it was thrilling to see how many of the curricula choices I've made in the past are being built into the levels already finished, as well as the ones that are planned for the future. The use of R & S grammar was a huge plus for me, as this is the one curriculum I have stayed with since the day we began hsing our 19 yo son (now in college many miles away) when he was 4 years old. I see Notgrass is a hit--this is on the list for my 11th grade daughter for next year. Starting Points--loved it with my son! Now, I cannot recall some of the others that jumped out at me, but it was almost like coming home as I read some of the posts. It seems as if the program were custom-made for my family. I look forward to watching the curriculum grow and develop over the coming years.
I wanted some help/affirmation/differing opinions on placement of my son. He's currently in Singapore math EBK 2B. We're working on phonics through Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading--about lesson 70 which is almost 1/3 of the way through the program. A child who completes the program as written in the guide finishes up at about 4th grade reading level. Currently he is doing the long vowel sounds with silent e and has done almost all the consonant blends. He's reading aloud programmed readers slightly behind what he is reading in his phonics lessons just to help him with fluency and comprehension. He's reading well 2-3 letter words and is decoding fairly quickly words like branch, thrush, etc. Each day I say 4 or 5 words for him, and he writes them out with correct spelling. We sort of fell into this because even before we started phonics he was all about how words were spelled. He loves to decode and write the word. Go figure. He's also writing sentences once a week or so for copywork. At first I thought of placing him in Little Hearts, but after reading the placement chart and many messages, I'm leaning more towards Beyond. I'm hoping he'd be in the emergent readers by the time August rolls around as we will continue phonics, reading, and math over the summer. I learned from taking 3 weeks off at Christmas that that is just not a wise thing to do. He seems more on level with Beyond due to the math and reading level, however, since I am new to the program I may be missing something. So, if you see something that raises a red flag for you, please let me know. I'd appreciate any and all advice.
Thanks for such a great forum!

Re: New and need some affirmation
Welcome, Jen! Beyond... sounds like a great placement for your ds to me. You can be so proud of how he is doing - and a boy that loves writing is such a gift from God! I think that he'll really enjoy Beyond..., and he sounds like he has all of the skills necessary to do it. As far as the Emerging Readers Set, I wouldn't feel any pressure to begin it right at the beginning of the year. You can just begin it whenever you finish phonics. It is a wonderful group of books with great questions in the Appendix, and it can be started at any time that phonics is completed. I know some moms do it with Bigger Hearts for His Glory instead, and just use the Beyond... guide for the Emerging Reader's Schedule and questions. That was the only thing that jumped out at me - otherwise, you are ready to set sail to Beyond...!! I'll be doing it with you next year with my ds. Can't wait to do it again! (I did it last year with my other son). Nice to meet you - and don't be a stranger here!Jen in Va wrote: I wanted some help/affirmation/differing opinions on placement of my son. Jen,
I'll weigh in with a different view than the others...
I have done part of Beyond... and we are finishing it this year with my 2nd grade dd. We will do Bigger... next year with ds 10 and dd 8, using the extension pack for the 10 yo. I ordered Little Hearts...for my 4 yo (5 in June) son and started that with him in March. However, I'm finding that he is not ready for the History, Science, Geography..left-side plans. He is fine with the right side, although he does still need work on his letter names and sounds. Anyway, I have just about decided to order LHTH for him, then move into LHFHG after that when he is 6. Another reason for this is that I'm just not sure if he'll be ready or if I want him to try to move into Bigger for 2nd grade. It just seems so early...but I know some are doing this too. If your son is ready, you'll know best; I just wanted to present what I have come upon in our effort to begin with youngest ds. He is able to listen to stories for a longer period of time, but I don't feel the comprehension is there for the History, etc. I want to know he's understanding it, instead of just pushing through it, KWIM? Plus, all the ladies here keep gushing over how wonderful LHTH is; so be sure you really do look closely at LHFHG; there really is a lot there, and the Math, L.A., etc. can always be done on his level. As a mom who has homeschooled for so long, I'm sure you are familiar with all of this. I just wanted to encourage you to give LHFHG another look!

Hi Jen!
Your post sounds almost like my story. I learned of HOD a couple of weeks ago through another message board and have been enthralled (reading all I can) ever since. I don't have items in my cart yet, but I'm making a list
I too have a child (dd) who will turn 6 in Oct. She's on lesson 63 of the OPGTR, is starting to read the beginning reader books, and has just completed Earlybird K Math 2B.
I have conversed with Carrie about where to place my dd and have been going back and forth between Beyond and Little Hearts. I'm leaning toward Beyond since she's ready for Primary Math 1 and the emerging readers.
I can't really help you with placement, but I just wanted to say hello!

We just started Little Hearts with my dd6 (turned 6 in December) and we LOVE it! These are such wonderful programs that I would say get as many in as you can
I can't help with placement, but I just wanted to encourage you to think outside of academic ability as well. The Bible readings, activities, science, history and everything else is SO perfect for her concentration span, gross/fine motor skills, art interest etc. I would even think about using your own LA/Math and going with the rest of the program. There are also the later years to think about because I had to use filler as an in between with dd had finished one program but wasn't developmentally ready to move on to the next....

Hi Jen! Welcome to HOD!
You said you were going to continue with academics through the summer....right? I would lean toward just starting Little Hearts now alongside your phonics and math. The activities in Little Hearts are geared to this age and provide for plenty of "get your wiggles out" time. Then, when you finish, you will have a very confident 6 yo who will be totally ready for Beyond. The emergent readers can be started at any point in Little Hearts or in Beyond.
I should put a disclaimer on all my posts....I'm a better late than early proponent but I'm in the minority! My kids made mudpies for an hour today! Hey, they very carefully measured the perfect ratio of water to dirt....it was math!

Jen,
I just wanted to say hi and welcome!
I'm not much help with your placement question...sorry. I don't have experience using LHFHG or BLHFHG yet. I would lean toward telling you to enjoy Little Hearts and not rush ahead, but you know your child best. Beyond may be the program for him.
I'm sure that you will enjoy either program that you choose!

Jen,
Welcome to the boards! We're glad to have you here!
The ladies are doing such a good job of helping you sort through the placement process for HOD. It can take a little time to talk through options and feel comfortable you have the right fit for your family.
The best way to discover the right fit for your family is to look at the placement chart, placing the most weight on the categories on the first page of the chart (age, reading, writing, math). From what you've shared, as far as the chart goes, it does sound like your little guy will be ready for "Beyond...".
The next consideration is what kind of philosophy you are education-wise in your home. From some of the choices you've listed in your post, it looks like you lean toward the classical philosophy a bit. This most likely means that you like to keep up a strong pace with your language arts and math (and I'm guessing history and science too).
If that is the case, "Beyond..." would again fit your family philosophy well.
I know the ladies don't want you to miss out on the wonderful history and activities in "LHFHG", but with your son's solid progress in math and language arts, he'll be ready for the skills in "Beyond...".
We've also found it is easier to slow a program down than it is to step up the pace. So, if needed you could always slow down.
If I'm off base, just set me straight. I'm just thinking out loud to help you reason through your options.
Blessings,
Carrie

Such great advice and thoughts from everyone! I'm not sure which direction to go in now. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just means I need more prayer on the subject. I'll continue to read the posts, and take a look at the samples and go on from there.
Thank you all so much for the advice, your experiences, and most of all, the welcome You made me feel right at home.
