Copywork in Beyond question

Post by alydar » Mon Jun 13, 2011 10:27 pm

Hi,

We are just getting ready to start our new "year" tomorrow and I was prepping everything this evening when I got stumped about the poem copywork. The first one, The Storm, has 3 stanzas. When using the poem for copywork do you assign a little bit each day (dividing it as equal as possible over 4 days) til they have written the whole thing by the end of the week or do you just choose bits and pieces (like one or two lines) with no intent to have the whole thing written by week's end? I know it's very child dependent as far as what each can handle but I was just looking for a general idea here.

Hi there!

You are right, it is very child dependent. I started out the year trying to get my ds to finish the poem each week and found it was too much for him, but I didn't like the idea of a half finished poem by the end of each week so I have him continue his handwriting practice in the Getty Dubay books so he is ready for cursive in Bigger. Once he is stronger in his handwriting, we will start the poetry copywork again with the manual and see how he goes. You can always start off with 1 or 2 lines each day and build up over the year so by the end of the year he is confident and completing poems within each unit....just take it as it comes and see how your lil one goes!

Hi Corrie!

That's a good idea to consider about continuing on in a program til he's ready (love homeschool for that!! :D :D ) DS dreads his though...he actually does better with true copywork vs handwriting practice if that makes any sense at all.

I feel the copywork is important because it accomplishes a lot more than handwriting practice, so I just give my son a section each day. Some poems we finish, some we don't. When we first started we didn't finish any so we are making progress. Thanks for the link, that is neat.

How about letting them choose their favourite section to copy?
