Using emerging readers in Little Hearts

Post by Sophie » Tue May 17, 2011 8:48 am

Can I use the emerging readers in Little Hearts? And then use Dithor level 2 in Beyond? My son has almost finished his phonics and skill wise could be placed in Beyond, but age wise I'd rather have him in Little Hearts. And if I'd do this, can I wait with grammar until Bigger as scheduled? I'd rather do that as he's still young. What is the language arts (spelling? copywork?) like, in Beyond and Bigger? I really want to combine my 2 children so it might spend a bit longer in one guide (for the little one to catch up) and hit grammar even later.
One last question: Is there no handwriting program for Beyond?

Thank you again! You're all so helpful

THe handwriting in Beyond is copywork. There is a LA box in Beyond that covers spelling 4 days and grammar 1 day. I think it would be plenty for even a second grader. You can definitely do ERs with LHFHG, but you'd need the Beyond manual for the schedule for ERs. In Bigger you start with R&S books for grammar and still do copywork, plus they learn cursive.

I actually did ARFH - A with my oldest during Beyond because she was on the young side and her hand strength was still very poor.

Ditto to pp's wise words! :D We did the ERS about halfway through LHFHG with my middle ds and loved it. We got the Beyond manual for the great plans for the ERS, and my ds soared. :D We did ARFH A too, as my ds needed a bit more handwriting practice. HTH!

You can definitely start the ERs with LHFHG. That is what we did this year. We purchased the Beyond guide for this purpose. We started slowly at first (e.g., just having ds read one of the Bible stories at a time instead of the full assignment), so that my son could build confidence. Now we are up to full speed and 2/3 of the way through the ERs, and ds is really enjoying the books. HOD has excellent book selections!

My son is definitely ready for the Emerging Reader's Set so, I'm glad you all gave a thumbs up!

My son just turned 6 this past December '11. He started Little Hearts last August and he also did the ER's. I've also taken him through Spelling List 1 that is in Beyond and the light grammar lessons as well.
This coming school year we will do Beyond for 2nd grade, DITHOR level 2/3, and R & S English 2.

I think your plan sounds just right for your child! Isn't it wonderful how flexible HOD is - that you can tailor it to suit your individual child?

Great responses here! I agree that HOD works well to meet children where they are in the 3R's. :D I think the plans outlined in the thread sound great!

Blessings,
Carrie
