OT: Asperger's resources?
OT: Asperger's resources?
Dh and I have ds6.5 scheduled for an eval with a developmental psych (in December, sigh, what a wait!) because we and our pediatrician are very suspicious that he has Asperger's...I'm looking for a resource we can read in the meantime and possibly learn some new strategies (on top of consistent discipline
) to help him in certain situations. Does anyone have any resource recommendations? I ask here because you all are a large group of Christian moms with such a breadth of experience...I know there's not much chance of there being a resource from a Christian pov, but that would be especially appreciated. Feel free to PM me so we don't clog up the board
Thanks

Re: OT: Asperger's resources?
We have suspected this for our DD9 as well. Before getting a diagnosis, an official one that goes in her record, we are treating the sensory processing issues that come with the territory first. Many times, they find the spectrum disorder signs actually were sensory issues and the diagnosis is never made and suspicions are put to rest. The biggest help is "brushing and joint compression". I'd talk to a local pediatric occupational therapists that is very familiar with and experienced in treating children with sensory processing disorder. I'd definitely get her an OT evaluation with absensory profile. We for my DD some "chewy" toys and started the brushing/jc and have seen massive improvements. She also had a huge issue with impulsivity so we are treating that with meds now in addition to the "sensory diet". The combination has worked wonders for us. I was against the meds at first but after seeing such positive changes, and such a happy girl, not a zoned out zombie like I thought the meds did...I'm just so happy. We may never get a Dx of aspergers now. Maybe, maybe not. The social skills are still an issue bit if we keep up the sensory diet, even those are slowly improving. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
oh, and caffeine actually helps too. Weird, but it does! I can explain it better if im not typing on my phone. But the reasoning is so interesting!!

Thanks! I spoke to a friend today who's an OT I used to work with (I'm a SLP) and she recommended an OT evaluation with a sensory profile as well...we're going to pursue that asap and look forward to learning some strategies that will help ds
