High school using CTC

Post by ChristyH » Tue Apr 26, 2011 3:55 am

Hello,
I have checked the sticky up at the top for things to add when trying to extend a level for high school, but has anyone ever really done that? Are there any books anyone would recommend to help me learn how to keep track of everything if we went that route?

I am currently using CTC for 9th grade, and loooooving it. I know there are others doing the same.... Do you want me to list for you everything that we are doing? I just really used all of the suggestions I have read in most of the posts that are probably in the sticky??? :D :D To keep track, I really just have a grade book and then I have a folder with everything listed that we are doing, the requirements for our state and my plan for the next three years of highschool. My state does not require portfollios and such, like I have seen some of the other ladies talking about. There are some wonderfully gifted organized ladies on here that I know will come and answer this better!! :D

Yes, please list what you are doing to make it ninth grade. I live in Michigan and our homeschool laws are very accomodating.

These are just the things we added to the CTC program to make it highschool worthy
First we added the extension package, then

Math-
Video Text Algebra (If she is doing well with Saxon, I would stay there??)

Language Arts- (instead of what the grammar in ctc)
Grammar Rod and Staff level 7 (half this year and half for 10th grade)
Literature Drawn Into the Heart of Reading (DITHOR) we study 9 different genres :
Biography- Up From Slavery byBooker T. Washington and Traitor: The Case of Benedict Arnold
Humor- Emma and Mammas Bank Account
Historical Fiction- Anne of Green Gables
Adventure- The Hobbit and Robinson Crusoe
we havent done the others yet
(we still do the dictaion scheduled)

History- in this order
The Archaeology Book by David Down
Unwrapping the Pharoahs
Our YOung Folks Josephus by William Shepard (these were while reading The Story of the World)
Plutarchs Lives for Boys and Girls by W.H. Weston (with Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome)
Caesars Galic Wars by Olivia Coolidge

Science- instead of science in ctc
PAC Works Physics and Chemistry (accoriding to them this is worth two credits and meant to be done for 9th and 10th)

Geography-
will get one credit for all four hod guides starting with ctc

Elective-
PAC Works Shop program
(will do a language later and whatever else we choose)

Bible-
Balancing the Sword (we have this and will add it soon, just needed time to adjust to the change in cirriculum)

I hope all this makes sense :D :D

We're using CTC for 8th grade, so I'm just beefing it up with the recommended extension package from HOD.

But, for next year, we're using RTR, and our year should look like this:

Bible--RTR plus BJUP Bible Truths C (9th grade level)--usually do Bible Truths on Friday
History--RTR
Literature--RTR extension package, plus Abeka 9th grade literature as a supplement, AND DITHOR with age-appropriate selections
Math--Life of Fred Algebra
Science--Apologia Physical Science (recommended for 8th or 9th grade)
Foreign Language--Power Glide French for High School
Spelling--Abeka Spelling, Vocabulary, and Poetry 9
Language Arts--RTR readings, plus DITHOR, plus ACE English
Art Appreciation--RTR
Shakespeare study--RTR
Music--violin lessons
Field Trips, etc.--local homeschool group

I also bought a world history Abeka high school text to have as a reference (and which would accomodate the "high school credit worthy" requirement). Not sure how much we will really need it, since HOD is SO thorough already! This is all so much more than I ever remember getting for our high school education!

Are you guys counting any credits for this? Is any one doing anything special for writing?

My mind has been so set on MFW Ancients for quite a while now, but when I figure out the cost both that and CTC, I come up with $1380, a huge chunk for us. If I beef up CTC that will make it cheaper but I feel out on limb then. Can you see my wided eye fear? LOL

Carrie gives information on how to count high school credit for each subject. It is approx. 160 hours of class work for 1 credit. (I think that's correct!) It's explained in her "sticky" notes at the top of the board.

If you have high school level subjects, and you are putting in the time, you can count credit for each one. (I figured out our tentative plan for 9th-12th grade, and we were well over 23-25 credits.)

For writing, it is part of our (grade-level) ACE English, but we are also using the HOD RTR suggestion of "Medieval Writing Lessons" from IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) curriculum. CTC has "Write with the Best" which covers from 3rd-12th grade level.

For writing we are just doing the Write With The Best in CTC. Carrie suggests to do Write With the Best 1 and 2 for making it Highschool worthy. My son has had very little writing up until now, so this is just what we are doing to take it slow. My son will get credits for the following: 1each for science, language arts, history(or social studies), math, Bible (elective), shop(elective), 1/4 credit for the geography in CTC. I think that is it :D :D
