Science in RTR for older child
Science in RTR for older child
My son will be using RTR next year. We have just finished Apologia Astronomy this year. I was going to use the science Option #1 and Option #2 instead. I found on the forums that other people are doing this to replace astronomy. My question is will this be enough for my 13 year old 7th grader? I know the AIG Weather and Water is for up to 8th grade, but what about Option #1. He loves science so I want to make sure it is enough.

That is a lot of good science. I think you would be fine. Have you checked to see that the AIG book is used the same amount of time as the astronomy? Normally, the AIG is used to replace the three books listed in option 1. So normally you would use either option 1 or option 2 with the astronomy and geology books. Since you already did astronomy, your plan makes sense to me, just double check the time each book is scheduled for. We are doing RTR next year also. Enjoy!

We haven't done RTR here yet. It's still several years away for us, but I do recall Julie or Carrie mentioning that if someone had done the Astronomy book that they could just do Option 1 and Option 2 instead and that it work out to be the right amount of time. I haven't read these particular books that are scheduled, but I have read great things about them. I've been reading another of the books in the Exploring series, Exploring Physics. I can tell you that book is plenty for a middle school! John Hudson Tiner is an amazing author and his books are living, yet meaty. Cathy Duffy says the books are best for upper elementary through high school (http://www.grovepublishing.com/science/ ... -earth.htm) The publisher, Master Books, puts it in the middle school category. So I think it is definitely sufficient for 7th grade. I haven't seen what activities that Carrie has to go with the book, but I am sure they are great. I think this will be fine for your 7th grade son. Hopefully next week after the convention, Carrie will be around to let you know if there is anything else that you would need to do to up the science.
