picking a curriculum for nxt year
picking a curriculum for nxt year
This year i had a first grader home using Beyond and she is doing well. My preschooler was enrolled in pre K but I ended up pulling her out do to her getting very upset even throughout the night of why I'm keeping her sister home and not her. I figured the stress on her was not worth it. However I added stress to myself because we are so off schedule and now way behind in curriculum, life and house chores. Anyway I want to figure out how to group them together with out my then 2nd grader being behind or repeating info and my K not getting overwhelmed. Any words of wisdom? Thanks in advance, Blessings!

Welcome to the HOD board! I'm sorry your year hasn't gone as you planned. Here is a link to the placement chart: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php This is a good place to start to figure out where your dc would place skill wise. That will give everyone a good idea of what might work best for you. Let us know where they place and we'll go from there. I'm sure you'll receive lots of great advice and wisdom from the wonderful ladies here.

Welcome to the HOD Board!
I am glad your first grader is doing well with Beyond Little Hearts - that is a sure sign she is accurately place - good job, Mom!
As far as your dd coming home from PreK, I am so glad you made that decision, but I can empathize that her joining you in the middle of your year with your first grader has created the need to transition her into your day to day. Combining the 2 of them will not be easier unless they fit fairly well together in a program, so the advice to check out the placement chart is excellent! Could you please tell us about your little preK sweetie with just the first page of the placement chart in mind? For example, how old is she, does she know her letters, is she starting phonics, etc.? We can then help put together a super plan with you for your dc. Let me say that I have heard everywhere that combining is always easier, and after 15 years of teaching, I can tell you that is not true. Unless dc are fairly close in needs and abilities, combining is actually harder on them and also on us as homeschool moms than not combining. I would love to help you out with placement if you can share a tad about your little one. You have come to an excellent place here by coming to the HOD board! We are a caring community of moms here, and we like to encourage one another and help each other out, so just keep posting til you have your plan in place! Placement is important - this is a year of your life, and your dc's lives, so it's sooooooooo worth the time, take it from someone who's had to figure that out herself!
In Christ,
Julie

Re: picking a curriculum for nxt year
Thank you so much for replying to my post. You ladies are so sweet to take your time and want to help. I really appreciate your wisdom. This is the first message board I ever joined so I'm a little new to the whole seen. This might be a silly question, but what does 'dc' mean in your reply? Anyway... my preschooler is finishing up little hands with heart of Dakota and she will be moving into little heart. I feel comfortable with the resources I have for her. She is also my very energetic kid who is early distracted, so I added a few learning games to my supplies! After reading a lot of my catalog and other curriculum online this week, I'm thinking their too far apart to combine them. I would end up watering down my soon to be second graders lessons to meet her sister and the other way around. I really enjoy heart of Dakota, and how it is mapped out for me. I'm thankful I was introduced to it. Therefor I know I'm sticking with it, but need to order Emma (my oldest) her own curriculum. So many decisions a mom needs to make. Thanks for your support ladies!

DC means darling children. it took me a while to figure out all the abbreviations too.
I wanted to encourage you that doing 2 programs is doable. Especially the two you are looking at. I am doing 3 programs now. I am usually finished with my lessons by 11:30, we start at 8:30.
You will really enjoy Little hearts and Bigger. I am doing Little hearts this year and LOVE it. I am sad to be starting Lesson 17 today, as I know we are half way done. Bitter sweet.
We did Bigger last year and throughly enjoyed. The stories and activities really made a impression on our family.
I am sure you will have a terrfic year with the two programs you have chose.
