Question about Science workbooks

Post by Treewin » Fri Mar 28, 2008 9:35 pm

Hello again ladies!

I had a quick question about the science for Bigger and Beyond. I plan on doing both levels next year with a 9 yr old and a 6 yr old.

When I looked at the science book for Beyond (God's Wonderful Works) it looked like it was a consumable book that my 6 year old would write into. Is there an equivalent book for my older daughter in the Bigger package? I was thinking we would *do* science workbooks at the same time and just have the kids do different levels but it did not seem to me that there was a workbook for the Bigger package. Am I missing something?

If not, might dd9 be able to do the same workbook from Beyond as she has not done that level? Would it too babyish for her?

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I can not seem to find a good view into Exploring Planet Earth. So, I am not sure what it is like.

FYI, my kids ask to *see* the HOD site almost everyday. They are so excited to start and want to know what each book is about. This is how I came to this question: Dd wants to know if she can do a Science book too! :D

May I suggest renaming your curriculum. "Drawn into the Heart of Learning" That is certainly what is happening here and
we haven't even bought it yet!!!!!! :o

Thanks in advance for any information.

I don't know about Beyond, but in Bigger we are notebooking our science. :-) So we read, then do the experiment, then we put it in our own paper and in our own binder.
For example, we are doing the book One Small Square that is talking aobut he seashore. One day the boys were to draw a picture of two animals they've learned: One that lives in the water, one that lives in the shore. Then they labeled them, colored them, wrote a Bible verse at the top of the page, and then we put it into the notebook. Another day they did an experiment with what sinks, what floats. They had to write their question, their hypothesis, their method or procedure, and their conclusions. Then we put THAT page in the notebook.

The science book for Beyond is like a regular "book". Mostly text and pictures (I like the words are big and clear for new readers) there are a few pages here and there with questions, but it looks like even the publisher intended it to be answered on notebook paper rather than the book.

In bigger, the science is more of a notebooking style, like the other poster said.

Well the extension pack science (Exploring Planet Earth) http://www.heartofdakota.com/BHFHG-extension.php has a workbook section after each lesson. Maybe that would be a good fit. My kids love it.

That's what we have-the extension pack. :-) What I've done is use the review questions as jump starts to their unit ending narrations.

Treewin,

The science book "God's Wonderful Works" that is used in "Beyond..." is really more of a "read as a follow-up to the experiment type book", so no real notebooking there.

The 6 science books used in the "Bigger...." science package are real books and have actual daily reading assignments and follow-ups (notebooking once a week, two experiments a week - one discussed and one written down- and two narration practices a week).

Hope that helps!

Blessings,
Carrie
