enjoying American Pioneers and Patriots!!!

Post by jacynamommy » Thu Feb 10, 2011 7:43 pm

We recently started Beyond, and I can't say enough about American Pioneers and Patriots...what a fantastic book! Thank you, Carrie, for this fine selection. I was bored to tears in history growing up and never really cared for it until we started homeschooling! Now it is one of my favorites and this book has been such a blessing. My kids ask for more and talk about the stories hours after finishing them. What a joy!

I so agree with you. We enjoyed the whole program when we did Beyond. I can't wait to do it again with my dd!

We loved this book as well! In fact about a month ago, I pulled out my HOD tubs for each guide, and let my dc choose any books they wanted to reread from previous years they'd done. My oldest ds surprised me by going right for "American Pioneers and Patriots" (as well as a bunch of extension titles I had gotten but hadn't let him read yet from PHFHG and CTC  ). He whisked off to his room to read shouting, "This book is awesome, mom!" He finished it reading late into the night (it was Friday, so no school the next day, and a bit later of a bedtime allowed  ). Then on Saturday, he got "Stories of the Pilgrims" and "Boys and Girls of Colonial Days" to reread, saying, "You just can't stop with that 'pioneers and patriots' book, Mom! These books go right with it and I just have to read them too!"

My middle ds and I are currently doing BHFHG's, and my oldest ds has his eye on the Eggleston books next. He's asked to read them again repeatedly, but I told him 'no', as these are very special to my middle ds's year right now. He keeps asking how much longer until we'll be done with the "red books" as he calls them, and my middle ds keeps grinning all the while and saying, "We're taking our own sweet time with them - you'll just have to wait - they're mine all mine right now," and then my oldest gives a mock mean grimace and they both laugh. Ahhhh, good books. Yes, I'm getting my history education now - everything in my past years of schooling (even college and my masters) doth not compare! :D

We just started it as well! We too are enjoying it. We curl up together on the couch and read/discuss etc. It's just that kind of a book. I also like the fact that you read it all at once and then go back and reread it. Good stuff!
