Really liking RTR for our first high school year!

Post by water2wine » Thu Jan 20, 2011 1:00 pm

Just wanted to encourage those of you that are thinking of using the HOD guides from CTC on for High school as we plan to do. :D We had a rough start this year just due to illness and some family issues and had to take a break from school for a bit longer than we intended so we are really not as far into school as I intended, but such is homeschooling. :D Anyway just really enjoying using RTR as our 9th grade for my oldest this year. I used some of what Carrie suggested viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7240 and some of our own that just felt like it was a natural correlation to us. We are choosing to cover government and church history. These are things that I feel if Carrie covers again that is just more for us to know and we feel like RTR leads that way easily to add on in those categories. If later guides cover them in the same way then I will slip something else in that guide to cover the gap. In truth I wanted to add logic and art appreciation too (and might still sneak in the art appreciation  ) but it just seems put us too high on the units so we have to save some of that for Rev to Rev when use that for our 10th grade year. The big thing is that HOD provides the glue and really in that I do not feel like I have to coordinate everything so much lesson by lesson and that takes away the feeling that to beef up you have to write your own program that I have felt with other programs when I have tried to tweak. I really feel like my daughter is getting the best first year of high school we could give her. Better even than if we had used something directly written for high school because, HOD is like minded to our family and spiritual goals for our children and it is flexible enough to allow us to add things that we feel God is calling us to on a by child basis.

I just want to encourage those that are really wanting to stick with HOD but are in the situation where God can't answer the "Please make Carrie write High School" prayers in time for your child  that beefing up is a wonderful option. :D I am happy to share with anyone that is in that place what we are doing with RTR. I do not want to list it here because I feel like those recommendations posted on the board are better coming from Carrie and I do not want to confuse people. Also this is my most motivated child so we are attempting perhaps more than we would with our other children. But if you want some ideas to get credit in some other areas I am happy to share privately. Mostly I just wanted to encourage others that if you want to use HOD for high school the transition is very natural and we are just feeling like we made a great decision in choosing to add on a bit and stay with HOD for high school. When I felt God lead me to HOD I really felt like it was not just for a season but for the long haul and a peace that what He leads Carrie to write will be what my family needs. Sometimes God really does mean exactly what he says even if in our logic the answer does not seem to be there at first glance. And being as I am, I did second guess it and go looking for high school else where. The thing I found is that there is nothing HOD like written for high school. Nothing comes close  and I felt like my daughter was not going to have the same great school that my other kids had. So after searching hard. I realize the obvious that God really did answer exactly the way He meant to with HOD and it was not for a season even if on paper our school was changing for my oldest. And it led me to look at beefing up and asking questions of Carrie how to do that and of course she is very generous in helping people way beyond the scope of what we can expect of her. In that I began to see in that sort of less conventional solution is the path God is going to bless even for our most academic child. It is still the perfect foundation for us. :D So just want to encourage you that HOD can really be a great foundation and guide for high school and you can get your credits you need while you still have that blessed foundation that HOD provides. We are finding that even with the beef up we do really have the same HOD feel in fact it is just deeper. We are really loving it! :D So just wanted to share for others that might need a little encouragement. It can really work out great to beef up the higher guides for high school if you are so inclined and it is not a lot of work to make it happen. :D

ETA- Just wanted to add so I did not confuse anyone. RTR is not written at high school level as is. We just used some recommendations to make it credit worthy. Just wanting to make sure that part is clear. :D

Thanks so much for posting this, WTW. It is perfect timing for me. Just last week, I spent a lot of time checking into high school options for my now 7th grader. We are doing CtC, so she would be in high school with the upcoming Rev to Rev guide. Honestly, there is nothing that appeals to me at all like HOD does. I just love HOD. It is exactly what I want for my kids. We are in our 3rd year and it gets better all the time. I had pretty much decided after all my looking around, that I really did just want to figure out how to beef it up so that my oldest can continue high school with HOD. I have to admit that I'm scared about doing that. I'm not a good tweaker and I'm afraid that I will leave something out or not know how to track credits, etc. I'm so thankful for those who have gone ahead of me and that can attest to how well it works. I think HOD for high school is what we want and need - so I'll work on figuring out how to beef it up when I get there.

And my twins will be doing Geography Guide in 9th and then I'll need something further for them to finish out high school. So, yes, I'm one of those praying that God may guide Carrie to keep on writing. If not, I trust He has something else in store for us, but it's hard to imagine anything better than HOD!

Thanks for sharing your story with us! It encourages me and the timing of your post seems like another affirmation from the Lord that my gut instinct to stay with HOD for high school is a good one!

I have five others that will hit about the same so I am still in that secret prayer group as well. :D I just have to trust god on that one and still thank Him that even if it does not go that way they will have a wonderful foundation of all the HOD guides that have prepared them to make learning the HOD way a habit for them. But still hoping and praying.

May I ask what method you use for keeping track of credits and grade transcripts, etc.? Do you use a computer program or just keep it all written down? I'm trying to figure out the easiest, yet most reliable, way to keep track of things. I like simple!!

Simply. :D I use a spread sheet. I listed all the extra stuff I am adding and broke down the credits listing the sources used down to the books that are extra to HOD (meaning what I added). I made a weekly reading plan and sort of alerted my dd by week when papers were written and tests were coming in things that are not science, math and LA because I have no interest in rewriting a schedule that is written for me. I keep a spread sheet on the classes and enter in the grades as they come. I have never found a book I liked but Donna Young and Excel are my friend. Donna Young has some forms. http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/hischl.htm

A very helpful thing is to map out a tentative 4 year path that covers all the requirements and lists things that are electives etc that support your child's areas of gifts. HSLDA has some great info on that as does Donna Young. http://www.hslda.org/highschool/ From reading I get what trips people up is they do not know where they are headed and don't keep track well of where they have been. Just using a simple spread sheet and keeping track of all gradable opportunities helps a lot.

In thinking how HOD could be graded for hs I found there really is a lot written into the program. We have the notebook that is certainly worthy of grading. Written narrations are also worthy of grading. Then if you want more essays are easy to add using the key ideas and perhaps linking them to the Bible for the day makes a lot of sense to me. If you need a more tangible system. I think something that would be easy to add and I promise you I am about as lazy as they come in making my own way on these kinds of things so this is easy. Take the Key Ideas, some of the maps and info from the time line for maybe 8 weeks and whala an exam can be easily written. Essay questions and fill in the blank I think are easily generated without having to do all the reading we are having our kids do independently. Carrie already has the Key points isn't that what we want them to walk away knowing. So those are my not so rocket science lazy mom way of creating more to be graded if needed. I guess that sort of falls into record keeping but really I felt like it might be something others are just wondering so ignore if it complicates things.

Thanks for taking the time to type this up. When I get closer, I may ask for an actual look at your spreadsheet! It sounds like you've got a good thing going and I appreciate you sharing your wisdom with me. I love gleaning wisdom from those who have gone before me. :D

water2wine,

This is so good to hear! :D I was hoping high school was going well, and I think that gives all of us headed in that direction needed encouragement. Thank you for sharing this here, and I would be doing the same thing with HOD if I had a high school student.

I agree with everyone here, that your post is such an encouragement, especially since we are planning to follow you on the "HOD for High School" path! (We are currently using CTC for 8th, and planning RTR for next year.)

I'm with Tiffini in that I may want to peek at your spreadsheet, too, because I'm not 100% clear on how I will keep track of credit hours starting next year.

Hello all,
I am new to HOD and will be starting my children in the fall, DD2 in LHTH, DS8 (9 in July) in Bigger, and I have DS15 who will be in 9th. I am currently using MFW ECC for my older boys and really want both to make the switch to HOD next year. I worry though about my highschooler, I was planning on using MFW Ancient History and Literature which is 3 credits (1 History, 1 Bible, 1 Literature) and then adding the rest ( math, science, electives, pe, fine arts, Foreign Lang.). However after reading the responses I am more inclined to use HOD but have no idea how to tweak it to make it rigorous enough nor which year to use.
Oldest is ADHD and was falling through the gaps with excellent grades at PS. I wanted to firm up and work on various skills this year so we did not start 9th but rather extended 8th to cover last year and this year. Last year he did Ancient history using Ambleside Online which was very relaxed and yet strengthened his abilities greatly. This year is a focus on geography and just feeling very strained and his work has really been lacking. I have had some health issues and I think my training has been lacking with him. He needs that discipline CM encourages and MFW just does not include that. My energy level requires me to have that worked out ahead of time so I am hoping HOD can help with that! I apologize for my ramble but I am rushing to go make dinner. I would love to know how HS with HOD might be possible for us. Specific examples, schedules, what not would be helpful as I am very visual. We also use workboxes to organize our days if that helps.

May God Bless you,
Mandy

Hi Mandy! Welcome to the HOD Board! :D I enjoy this board so much and often find many of us are going through similar things in this blessed journey of homeschooling. To be able to move forward in homeschooling from year to year with joy is such an important thing for me, as I too plan to homeschool all the way through high school. I cannot put into words how much HOD has blessed our home and made it possible for me to homeschool with multiple programs, and with various health/life concerns over the years. :D So, first, I just want to say you are the right place, and I think HOD will certainly bless your home as it has ours! :D Moms are using HOD for high school and finding it to be a good fit, and there have been some specific threads where Carrie has personally tried to help with this. I will link them here:

Carrie describes how to beef up RTR for high school:

DITHOR Titles for High School:

We also have some amazing "Let's Share Our Schedules" threads that may be helpful. Carrie shares her schedule for her 4 dc there as well. :D

This board is full of gracious, encouraging, Christian ladies. It is one of my favorite places to come for good solid advice. I think you will fit right in, and I look forward to getting to know you better here and chatting more about your upcoming year until you have it all set to go! :D

Julie,
Thanks for the encouragement. My biggest concern was the books I would need to find but you pionted me in the right direction with the DITHOR thread.
Right now I am trying to plan DS15 HS and college leanings. He just finished a career assesment and while I was a bit surprised at the results they actually fit him rather well. If anyone has any good assesment links (free) for career exploration I would love them, btw! We are off to check colleges that fit with his interests as they are not widely offered (video game design, photography, acting, etc.)
