How much writing for Beyond?
Hi, I am trying to place my dd 6 for next year, when she will be a first grader. She is an excellent reader and will have completed Rod & Staff's phonics and reading 1 when the school year is over this year. Writing is not her best subject, well it is typical of any Kindergartener, so while she places into Beyond in most areas, I was wanting some insite as to the writing in it. Also, we have not done HOD yet, so we will be missing out on LHFHG...should I go with where she places, or bump down to LHFHG? Thanks for the help!

Re: How much writing for Beyond?
HI there,
My ds 7 is doing Beyond at the moment. He is not a strong writer either. To make this work, I choose to do the Getty & Dubay handwriting book for him (1/2 page/day) instead of the poetry copywork. There is a small amount of writing in other boxes on some days, but we find this works. When we finish the handwriting book and he is ready to start the one scheduled in Bigger, we will stop the handwriting book and start with the poetry copywork as I am hoping he will be ready for it by then. This will be about half way through Beyond for us. Then we will be ready for the correct handwriting book for Bigger.
We have not done HOD before this level either and it is going fine. I think it is more important to follow Carrie's advice on where your child's skill level is at in picking the right programme rather than worrying about things missed in previous programmes. You will be fine. Beyond is great. My ds loves it!

Thank You! I have probably asked too many questions about placement here but I just keep second guessing myself. I agree. I think I'll do beyond and modify if I need to. Thanks for the tip about the writing!

We are currently doing Beyond. There's not a ton of writing in Beyond. Mainly copying the poem. You could modify at the beginning of the year and just have your dc write less of the poem gradually working your way up to writing all of the poem by the end of the year. Just set yourself goals for each quarter. KWIM? HTH.
