LHTH - modified?

Post by kerby » Fri Mar 21, 2008 11:22 pm

I am thinking of using LHTH for ds as a way to focus on him some during the day. He basically is already picking up letters and sounds plus numbers but by no means are they all solid. Would he be beyond this program completely? Couldn't he still learn from it? Is there a way I can modify this some to "beef" it up just a touch? Maybe it is where he needs to be but the samples that I have seen are easier because it is from the beginning of the book.

Any thoughts?

Hi Kerby,

I am going to respond to your post tomorrow because I have much to add, but right now dreamland is a callin'. The bottom line is that I think you can gain much from Little Hands despite what your son has already accomplished. My daughter knows her letter sounds and is able to read some three letter words. She is also doing quite well with numbers/math in general. Little Hands is still proving to be so beneficial in many ways despite these accomplishments. It is a wonderful program not to be missed. Even if you chose to do it for the bible focus alone, you would be doing your son a great service!

Anyway, it is 10:30 here and my eyes are starting to cross  so, I will follow up tomorrow with more info on your specific questions, assuming someone else doesn't beat me to it!

That is exactly what we are doing. I use LHTH for the Bible and activities. But I use the Reading Lesson instead of the ABC activity and MUS instead of the math activity most days. My dd also uses A Reason for Handwriting K on days that she wants. She's almost 5 and really is ready for LHFHG, but I hated to start it in the middle of the year, so we're just beefing up LHTH since she enjoys the Bible and activities part.

I know when I first received LHTH, I flipped through it and told my husband, "I got the wrong program this is too babyish for her". My husband told me to send it back and get the other manual. Well, I figured I would just keep it and order the next level. LHTH sat around for a while and eventually I picked it up again and figured I should atleast try it.

Turns out my daughter really enjoyed it (and it is not too babyish for her) and most importantly (at this age anyway), she was having such fun. And she was/is really connecting with the bible stories as well. I attribute this connection with the bible stories to the activities/crafts that are tied in with it. She remembers the bible stories with such clarity and detail.

Every now and then I waffle between adding to LHTH or doing it as is. So far, we do it mostly as is. If I were to add to it, here are some things I would include:

Adding in the Rod & Staff ABC Series with the exclusion of the 2 workbooks that are to be used with LHFHG.

Add in some math, we have the Singapore Earlybird Series 1A and 1B. The next in the series are used in LHFHG so, that works out well!

For science, use the K level text that is included in LHFHG and when it is time to move on to LHFHG use the grade 1 science text that is recommended

A Reason For Handwriting "K" (just an example) and when it is time to move on to LHFHG use RFH level "A" ( I believe that is the next level!)

We also use another curriculum that is lit. based so that provides plenty of storytime.

So, I imagine you have probably thought about adding in things this way yourself, but thought you might like to hear all of that as well!
