Memorizing Bible Verses

We are memorizing the verses in the ABC Bible Verses that came with LHTH. I say the reference and give 1 help (or 2 if verse is long). He has learned verses for A-T with a couple of fun quirks. I would eventually like him to memorize the reference and be able to go back and forth. I think all of this is great since I have problems remembering 1 verse.

My question is....How do your dc memorize verses?

I have friends whose kids rattle off the ref and verse no problem. Just wondering if there is something simple I'm missing.

I use the Hide Em in Your Heart CD that goes w/ Little Hearts and that helps my dd memorize them. I also type the verse out each week on an 8.5 by 11 piece of paper and let her look at it . She is learning to read so this helps w/ her reading and memorizing. She is a visual learner, so this is a great help for her. HTH!

We used to have a problem with this, but now it's getting easier.

I too use the CD and sometimes I change the original verse to completely match the CD, especially if they're long.

I also type out the verse...a different color for each week, on paper and stick it to the fridge all week.

Constantly going over the meaning is a great help. Sometimes they can't remember it because they don't understand it. In Beyond, they have you act it out and also try one line or one sentence per day.

Then of course I bribe my dd with gum if she gets it right or she can give me any bible verse.

We use the hide them in their heart CD and the games in LHFHG and that works great. For BHFHG I put the verses in startwrite and that is our copy work and just more handwriting for them as well. But then also my kids are such goofs I do what is in the manual of BHFHG but then we do some ridiculous and I am sure not even what Carrie had in mind things that link it to the words. Just over animated silly stuff.

And on the serious side we completely pick apart the meaning of the verses sometimes going to the Hebrew and Greek meaning of words. It really cements the true meaning in their heart. But the silly stuff does slam it home to the memory.

After introducing the verse on the first day we play a game. I write the entire verse and referrnce on the white board. We read through it once then I erase one word and ds has to say the verse including the missing word. Then he erases a word and I have to say it with two missing words. We continue this way until someone is stuck and needs help from the other player. Usually ds does better than me and can say the whole thing including the reference. He loves to do this and if I skip it he is not happy with me.

we use the box system from a web site I found. Basically you take a recipie box, make dividers for every day of the week, plus day of the month, plus ones that say, "daily" "odd" "even."
We put the verse on an index card, put it in the "daily" section. then once or twice day we read the verse-that's it. Just read it. Then when you can say almost all of it without looking (pretty close to memorized) you move it back to the next section "odd" those are things you read on odd days. Then you move it back to a day of the week,then you move it back to a day of the month.
We use our for more then verses-my boys use it for their times tables, things like the Lord's Prayer, the Apostles Creed, the books of the bible, grammar rules, spelling words, everything they need to commit to memory.

So, for today, Jamie (9) did his daily slot, his odd slot, his Wednesday slot, and his 19 slot. there's not much in his yet, but as we add to it I'm sure it will fill up quickly!

It's nice as we move things back that once a month we are reviewing things we talked about before, so it keeps it fresher in their mind.
It was awesome that the spelling list idea in our Bigger was to write them on index cards! worked in perfectly with our system!

Darci, I love your box idea! I like how you use it for things other than the bible verses too.

We have had the Hide 'Em in Your Heart cassette for years, so my two little ones are listening to it already. It is an awesome way to learn scripture! I hope the cassette makes it through another year.

And I had totally forgotten the "erase one word" game. The older kids played it all the time in Sunday School.

Darci! We do that exact same thing!!

They automatically know when it's time to go get the little red memory box!
