The Reading Lesson....

Post by LeAnna » Wed Mar 19, 2008 11:53 am

I was wondering how much the cd with the Reading Lesson is needed? Is it the same thing, just along with the book? Also, do any of you know of some good reading books (Bob Books, etc.) that can be used kind of as a supplement with the Reading Lesson?
I am just so stuck on what to use for Phonics. :? A part of me wants a more workbook approach. In which I was thinking of Sonlight. But, the other part of me wants something a bit more fast paced. I can't remember if I have asked this before, but I don't remember getting an answer back for it... How long does it typically take to get through the Reading Lesson? If we start in K, will be done by 1st? And then where do we go?

Thanks so much!! :D

My oldest sister used The Reading Lesson and loved it! I haven't used it, but I can answer your question about the CD. It is the same thing as the guide, just reviewed on the computer. Nothing really new there - but I've heard it's a great review tool if your child enjoys the computer! I know someone else will answer the rest of your questions too. I've heard great things from pretty much everybody who has used The Reading Lesson - I'd just already bought a ridiculously expensive phonics program before I knew about The Reading Lesson from Carrie. We got our copy of the Reading Lesson on Ebay and the CD didn't work. We never missed it. We enjoyed the program with my oldest and we are enjoying it again with my youngest. The book stands alone just fine,

Hi LeAnna,

I've used the reading lesson with my two daughters. I used it with my oldest when she was almost 5 - before starting kindergarten. She took to it really well and even though we have only gotten through lesson 13 (we stopped for a while and then she started kindergarten at a private school) she is reading really well. She is currently in kindergarten and can read way more than what she is being taught at school. I would say on at least a 1st grade if not 2nd grade level. I credit that to what she learned through the reading lesson and what she has picked up on her own. Plus I read to her a lot. I also started this with my second daughter when she was 3 1/2. We only got through lesson 8 and then we stopped because life got pretty busy and hectic. Even still, she is reading at almost the same level as her big sister.

They are now ages 6 and 4. I plan on finishing the reading lesson with them over the summer. I think if done consistantly, you should easily be able to finish it in a school year. When we are done, we are just going to start into the emerging readers that are in BLHFHG. After that we will start DITHOR.

I haven't used any other reading program, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I really like how it has worked for us. At the beginnig of each lesson their is one page of instructions for the parent, so it isn't overwhelming. Also, within the lessons, the font is quite large. This is nice because it is easy for the kids to see and there isn't too much on one page. Also, there are pictures on some of the pages.

We got the CD with ours because amazon was having a sale at the time. I really like the CD. It has all the lessons on it that are in the book. It makes it fun and reinforces what the lesson teaches. They type some of the words they are learning and it will ask them certain sounds and they have to click on the correct letter or blend of letters that makes the sound. They earn trophies as they finish each lesson. My kids really like it and they have learned from it. They recommend doing the lesson on the cd and then in the book. That is how we did it and I think it helped a lot.

Hope that helps a little. I would be happy to answer any questions you have. Go to www.thereadinglesson.com to see sample lessons. Also, there are some reviews of The Reading Lesson on amazon and on homeschoolreviews.com That's what helped me decide to go with The Reading Lesson.

LeAnna,

We use it with the CD. It is not necessary in the way that you will miss anything. I know the program would work without it. So if you are streamlining then you will be fine. But on the other hand I have to say that my kids absolutely love it. And I do think it helps to cement it all in and make the program more effortless. My kids do the lesson and really try hard so they can get to the CD. I use it as a reward. :D But I have also seen how if we had to stop a page short because we hit a little bump, after the CD they got it and retained it.

So completely not necessary to make the program work but for us it has made us move smoother and faster. We had a little incident that I will share with you. My ten year old that is on the Emerging Reading Level is using The Reading Lesson. The way you normally use it I guess it would not over lap but she has special needs and backtracking so that we do not loose ground is essential for her. She started using the CD and the program only recently. My dd that will be 4 this year and my just turned 6 year old apparently were very jealous. They started teasing her that she was using the "baby" lesson. Which was horrible for us on many levels and it ended very quick I assure you. But I asked her if she wanted to do it without the CD so they would not know and it is the first time I have actually used the same program for both so this would not happen. In fact it was the purpose in purchasing The Reading Lesson in the first place but I had no idea it would be so good and I began to see that it would help our older dd. My kids are really very kind to each other so I did not think this would happen. But kids are kids and it did.

Well I after I dealt with my two youngest, I spoke to my older dd about maybe not using the CD part so they would not know and if she wanted that. She did not want to stop the CD because she liked it and wanted to try to find a way to use it without them knowing. My dd is very prideful and was deeply hurt but she still wanted the CD too. So that is just a little story on the CD. It can be done and it is still a wonderful program without it but I will tell you that if my cd broke and my computer crashed I would by the CD again. I think some of that would be fueled by having three kids using it. But a lot of it would be because it really helps make it easy on me and I have three kids on different levels of learning to read and I need it to be easy. 8)

So that's a long answer but I just wanted to give you a different perspective in case it helps. :D
