DITHOR Really does work!

Post by Happy2bMommyof3 » Thu Sep 09, 2010 9:07 am

I've been giving free time to the dc in the morning. My oldest does math, cursive and the Independent reading (DITHOR) selection reading while I do school with the younger ones, then they can have free play together. Well, I finished up early with the young ones, checked dd's math and said..ok go play! I heard "But Mom, What about Amelia Earhart?" As she opened the book, she said "Look Mom, the next chapter is called First Flight", after reading a few lines..."Mom, she's 22 years old now!!"..."and in college"!! She was so excited that the questions she'd written in anticipation in her DITHOR student book were going to be answered! After reading her chapter she gave me the best narration she has ever given! She was even interrupted by my youngest to go play during her narration and said "Wait, I have to finish my narration first"!

Admittedly, I have felt that the activities in DITHOR were a bit cumbersome and wondered silently how necessary they were...but now I see DITHOR's value!!! :D

Thanks Carrie!

DITHOR is like that... a slow burn... and then a burst of a passion for reading and learning! :D The kickoffs and final projects are awesome too. They're always something fresh and new, and the Godly character traits have given us timely discussions too. We've been doing DITHOR for many years and still love it. I am so glad you are seeing the fruits that come from doing all of DITHOR! :D You're right - it really does work. Way to go dd!

Heather,

I really enjoyed reading about your daughter's enthusiasm and the thinking and pondering she'd been doing about her book's character. It is true that at first slower more thoughtful reading can feel almost cumbersome, but there are truly many benefits (as you're already discovering) in learning to ponder and think as kiddos live with a book over time. :D They also learn much discernment as they go through DITHR as well. DITHR has made a big difference in my boys as they grow as readers each year. (especially as my oldest son is in high school level literature this year)! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
