I think I need to switch.....

Post by psreit » Tue Sep 07, 2010 3:46 pm

handwriting programs. I recently started another thread about handwriting, and, surprisingly, I have realized, just today, we need to change our path. DD has been doing Handwriting Without Tears at O.T. since she was three years old. It was a good start for her. She seemed to be doing well on the HWT double lines. When she first started writing on paper, the three lines confused her. However, since she wrote on three lines when she was in kindergarten and her ETC books use three lines, I think she is getting used to that. She actually said today that she liked having the third line on top, so she knows where to begin her tall letters. So, now I have to decide what to do. I am thinking we will go with A Reason For Handwriting book A as listed in LHFHG. I was just wondering if anyone continues into book B, or if that is not necessary, since HOD goes into copywork in Beyond. I hope we can gain some consistency in handwriting by making this switch. I'm afraid it has been more confusing doing HWT and then having other workbooks in three lines.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. III John 4

Pam,

We found the same thing to be true with my oldest son when he used HWOT for years, so you are not alone. He too had trouble knowing how far up his letters should go, and we ended up buying special HWOT paper for longer than I'd care to admit. The transition to "regular" notebook paper was not a smooth one either. So, with our next kiddos in line we've followed the handwriting path laid out in our guides instead. If your daughter has had OT issues though, then PTL that she is writing, no matter what method was used! :D

I think your handwriting plan sounds like a good one for this point in her writing journey. A Reason for Writing 'K' has kiddos practice lower and upper case letters one letter at a time. If, after your child finishes the 'K' book, you feel she would benefit from a trip through the 'A' book, then by all means do so (as she heads into Beyond). We had to do this with one of my little sweeties, who was not quite ready for full-blown copywork when he began Beyond. I'll link you to a thread that discusses this option, as it may help as you ponder. :D
