DITHOR Questions and more...........

Post by Marcee » Wed Sep 08, 2010 2:39 pm

We are doing the biography genre-I am having my DD read Amelia Earhart as her reader to go along with her student DITHOR book. DITHOR has 19 days for the biography choice, but Amelia Earhart is supposed to be read in 15 days. :?:

When DD gets to the Adventure genre there are 2 books listed for her to read Is she supposed to read both? If so, how does that work with her DITHOR student book since it only has one set of "workbook" pages per genre?

Storytime-we are also doing a biography-Ben and me. Biographies are recommended for Units 1-4. The suggested Story Titles in the Appendix do not give a suggested number of days to complete the book, so we are doing a chapter a day. Obviously we are going to be done with the book way before Unit 1 is even completed! What do I do for the rest of Unit 1-4??? Do I read the other suggested biographies in the Appendix?

History Stories for Children-I don't see this in either Teachers Manual for BHFHG and LHFHG. I'm assuming it's an extra option for one of the curriculum, but I don't know where it fits in.

BHFHG-My DD had much more advanced spelling words in 2nd grade. What should I do? Just skip it or get her a more advanced book. Do dictation instead? (which looks too easy as well).

The reason I didn't do preparing is because she doesn't know cursive and I thought she would like the readers better in Bigger. Also, English 2 is a good fit as far as grammar and mechanics. Now, I'm thinking Bigger is going to be too easy. She LOVES her curriculum, but is begging to do more schooling. I am letting her read ahead in her reader.

She is LOVING H'schooling and wants to do it right when she gets up! This is such a blessing as she did not want to H'school due to our previous experience a couple of years ago. Just the idea brought her to tears. Now she wants to teach her brother! She did his math with him today.

When you fill out the calendar for DITHOR for your child you will notice that there are 15 days to fill out for the actual reading. The next 4 days are assigned for the project, if you look at day 15 plans in the teacher manual.

When DD gets to the Adventure genre there are 2 books listed for her to read Is she supposed to read both? If so, how does that work with her DITHOR student book since it only has one set of "workbook" pages per genre? You can see how the books are split up for the rest of the genres. Carrie has them split up in 5 or 10 day readings. I was directed to this page by another Mom, since I had not seen it before I started on DITHOR. http://www.heartofdakota.com/drawn-into-optional.php

I can't answer all of your questions, but I might be able to help with a couple of them....

In DITHOR, the reading portion of the program is for 15 days per genre. So your dd will read her book for 15 days. The last 5 days of the genre is used to work on a project corresponding with that book. When you have 2 books for a genre, the workbook pages are done with the book currently being read. For instance, if one book is being read for the first 5 days then any of the workbook pages for the first 5 days will be about that book. Then the next book will be read for the next number of days and the workbook pages for those days will use that second book. Is that clear as mud?

For Storytime, it is recommended that the book you choose be divided up into the amount that will have you finish it in 20 days. I admit, I have a problem with this because I like using natural divisions in the book. I love it when a book has 20 chapters! That works out perfectly. We are reading Ben and Me as well. We just started it today and since it has 15 chapters, we will be done early. I'm not for sure what I'll do. :? I'll probably still try to do the activities in the Storytime box with Ben and Me even if we've finished the book or I might look for a short biography I can read in 5 days. I'll see if maybe there are a couple of chapters that are longer and that would lend themselves to dividing. I might try that and see if I can stretch it to 20 days. I have a hard time though because the books are so good that I want to keep going. I'm worse than my children many times about wanting to continue on in the books!

The History Stories for Children is used in LHFHG. I'm not for sure which units, but it's in there. Just wait and you'll come to it eventually. It's in the History reading, but probably is just a day or so in a unit scattered throughout the year. It's part of the core program of LHFHG.

I'm not for sure what to tell you about the spelling. I would consider using the dictation and even though it might seem a bit easy. You might want to start somewhere in the middle if it seems way too easy. I know it looks easy and I wonder how my dc will feel about it, but I figure since dictation is a new skill for us all that starting with something easier is a good way to go. I figure that way, we can make our way through it quickly and gain confidence in this new area. If I find it is just way, way too easy, I might consider jumping ahead a bit. I did notice though that the difficulty does seem to increase quite a bit towards the later part. With dictation there is a lot more involved than just spelling so I'm thinking it won't be a bad thing to have some time getting used to it with words that are easy to spell.

I'm thinking one thing you could do to challenge your daughter more is get the extensions for Bigger and have her do those. That might give her the extras she craves. Also helping her brother is a great idea. I'm so happy for you that you are both enjoying your school year so much. We just finished our first day of Bigger today and we all had a blast! It's going to be great year! :D

I recall reading this when I was ordering the 2/3 books.

In the manual it tells you how many days you have to finish your book in each genre. Geez, I think all of the speed planning made me blind! It's on Unit 1 Day 1 for the love of saints  Even more embarrassing is that I figured out yesterday how many pages to read a day by dividing 116 (total # of pages) by 20 (the # of days to complete listed in the manual).
