Another DITHOR Question; maybe two ;)

Post by annaz » Tue Aug 31, 2010 7:46 pm

Sorry to beat you all over the head with a DITHOR question, but am I right in saying that all genres should be 15 days long? So if I have a book that is 10 days in length, I'll need another that is 5 days to make 15 to complete the schedule?

After perusing my new purchase, which I love by the way, it looks like I'll be short on the schedule for any book I chose that is 10 days. I didn't really realize this until I actually sat and read it all over. No big deal, I just want to make sure I'm reading this right.

Also, I only have one child. Can we skip a kick-off day? There's fantastic ideas with kick off, however some just won't work well with my schedule.

I don't know but I'm starting DITHOR for the first time and figuring this out too.

I just reread my guide specifically looking for this. And in all honesty, I missed the boat. It's right there in black and white. So yes...all go to 15 days. So if you have a book that is 5, you'll need one that is 10. I didn't know this before I ordered. But all the projects per genre go to day 19, because there is book work after the last day of the book read.

I'm waiting for the Book projects though that Carrie said they'll print for her. That's Option 2 and it looks like we'll be doing a lot of Option 2.

You also could schedule the 10 day book very lightly. Just count up all the word pages and divide by 15. Even if its only 2 pages per day. Esp since its your first time doing DITHOR having a light reading schedule can keep it from going overtly long till you get the hang of it.

Kick off days are fun try not to miss them they really enrich the program :-) I know what you mean I some times would just think creatively to do something similar but only for one child.

You also might find a 5 day book at the library that compliments your original book or have the child choose the 5 day book.

Thanks Tansy...I'm already starting light. Capyboppy. :D She's 10. That's pretty light, so I probably can't get much lighter :D than that.
I had a gift cert to use at Amazon (sorry Carrie  ) so my order was free. I'll probaby do most of the kickoffs, but some are group oriented and they don't work well with one. But still there's ideas there.

Oh ya cappy bobby is very light... We used it for humor, I remeber we added a Ameila Bedilia book to finish up the day 5.
and Yup you just can't do the group things with a one on one. Some times I would repeat a kick off we could do from before.

I don't know if ds will want to do this, but is it okay if they love the book and finish it faster than the 15 days? We're starting with The Black Stallion, I'm planning on having him read one or two chapters a day. We had our adventure kick off with a treasure hunt and he loved it. :D

Ooh. That sounds fun. I would say yes, but then you'll just need to find another book to finish up the 15 days! For me, I thought to do the Capyboppy in 5 (it says 10) and to do two other 5 day books. But that would start us out choppy. As a beginner I wouldn't want to do that. So I'm just going to do it as shown. As long as they are savoring the book and really understanding and can do the concepts, I don't see why not. I'm sure that someone that has already used DITHOR and actually knows what they're talking about will chime in.
