theory of evolution?

what's the usual grade this is taught in? My dh was asking tonight what we are doing for history and science. We want ds, at some point, to know the theory of evolution is out there. I don't want to teach it too early. Wondered if any of the guides will touch on it?

We didn't do evolution until 10th grade that I remember... I knew about it way before that.

Of course I believe both (not that we came from monkeys though) so our kids already know that just because a dog looked a certain way in the garden of eden doesn't mean that's the same way we think of a dog (for instance) They know that birds and reptiles are from dinosaurs... stuff like that.

That's good to know. yeah, Michael has learned a lot about dinosaurs. And actually said today he wondered about that scientists say dinosaurs were here before humans and the Bible says they were here at the same time.

I thought we should wait to actually teach the theory too

We touched on it in Preparing but he is getting a lot of it this year in CTC. You do need to know that the resources used are from Answers in Genesis so they are very young earth and focus on disproving evolution. We are really enjoying them, but we agree with the perspective that it comes from.

Ken Ham's The Answers Book is very good. I don't think he is right about every little thing, but I read it coming from an old earth perspective and it really opened my mind.

Yes, I agree with the Bible too. I want the biblical perspective but want him to know about it eventually.

Anyway, we tend to watch a lot of AIG movies on evolution. Some are technical, but some are very good if kids are inquiring. Especially the ones that uses both sides of the argument. I'd give you the name, as we've watched several good ones through our hs group science club, but I can't get the site to come up.

Oh yes. We have quite a few encyclopedias and science books that speak as if evolution is fact, and the discovery channel. I would actually enjoy some YE documentaries! I have never seen any! I think that I misunderstood what you said because to me it is odd to find someone who isn't familiar with evolution.

Some AIG publications also explain that evolutionists "think that it took thousands of years of gradual change like we see today for things in the past to form" for example.

CTC has Genesis: FInding our Roots as one of the scheduled books. On Amazon it was in a set of three with Adam and his Kin and World History Made Simple. One of my best purchases ever! I am so excited about HOD history because I know that Carrie has read Ruth Beechick so she can really integrate World and Bible history. It is so tough to do when the timeline is all messed up. Preparing is already integrating the history and we get to do it next year! YAY! Anyway, I am planning CTC for 7th grade so was thinking about adding these other Ruth Beechick books.

Let me preface this by saying I don't really know when it is appropriate to introduce evolution. Some of the books that Carrie has scheduled for science in the later guides we have been through, and I am thinking that they at least touch on the theory of evolution. I believe that the longer my dc study Truth, the better they will be able to recognize a counterfeit. That being said, we started letting ds listen to Jonathan Park on the Christian radio station in our town when he was around 7. They are adventure/dramas that present scientific evidence for Biblical creation while explaining how scientists use or misuse the evidence. Our family eventually purchased the cds (Vision Forum)- they come with great study guides, too. Ds listens to them at bedtime, rainy days, while he is building with legos, completing art projects, etc. He has a good grasp at age 11 of what the scientists say and what the Bible says. He understands evidence as it is and how it is interpreted (or misinterpreted) by scientists. I would rather have him introduced to evolution in contrast to the Truth of the Bible than on its own as fact (television shows are GREAT at doing this with their little "Ten million years ago..."). But now, I am rambling. Sorry
