Question about Biography readings in Beyond...

Post by inHistiming » Wed Aug 25, 2010 1:30 pm

I just realized for the first time yesterday (even though we're at the end of unit 2 already!) that the story time box says to choose a biography. I chose Mountain Born, which is in the Realistic Fiction category according to the Sample Book List. Anyway, should I flip to the later plans in the guide to refer to those questions as we read and answer questions, or can my dc still answer (and benefit from) the questions from the current story time boxes even though the book is supposed to be a biography? We could set the book aside to finish later....but that's weeks from now. Should I chose a shorter biography to use to finish up the 20 days with and just read the other book for fun at night? What would you do?

I would finish with Mountain Born and continue with the questions as written in the guide. Then, when you get to the Realistic Fiction category, do a biography instead. Other than the explanation of what each is at the beginning of the reading (introduction day), I am pretty sure the boxes are the same - mostly dealing with oral narration, not genre questions.

I think I would use the storytime box that goes with the Realistic Fiction book and continue with Mountain Born. Many of the boxes will be the same between the biography and realistic fiction, but what will differ is the scripture that goes with it, the character and story emphasis. Each genre has it's own character trait, scripture, and story element that it focuses on. It's possible that those for the biography would still work well for Mountain Born, but I'm not for sure. Unfortunately I can't remember all of the specifics that go with the biography storytime in Beyond. I do remember Mountain Born really well and I must say that is a great book. It was slow for us starting out, but once we got into it, we were hooked. Be prepared with some Kleenex at the end. I couldn't even read the last page out loud as I was choking back tears. I had to have my daughter read it and it choked her up too. Enjoy!

Oh you're going to have to finish "Mountain Born" now! The pp's description of it was so accurate - we needed the Kleenexes too. :D I do think you'll be missing out on some of the points of the genre specific plans though. You could just flip ahead to realistic fiction, match whatever day you're on and use those plans to finish it out. Then, when you get to realistic fiction, you could just do the 'biography" plans along with a biography. If the flipping is going to drive you nuts though, I'd finish reading "Mountain Born" at night, and do a short biography to finish out the genre study. I'd have to say I'd lean toward the latter, as I'm not a good flipper. :D

I think this is the best idea! :)

Thanks, ladies. I think we'll do as Julie suggested and read Mountain Born at night, picking a different, shorter biography to finish out the 'boxes'. I also am not a good flipper, and I have enough of that to do as it is.
