State study?

Post by Bramble » Thu Aug 19, 2010 10:19 pm

I'm just curious if any of the HOD programs have students focusing on the history of the state they live in? I would like my children to study our state's history so I need to know if I will have to cover that on my own.
Thanks!

So far I haven't come across that, and we have all the guides through Preparing right now. Unless I really overlooked something.

My oldest is taking a Michigan Studies class this year at a co-op we are joining. I'm anxious to see what info they provide, so I can use it and add to it for the others.

At one time, I think Carrie had said it would be included in one of the later guides. I'm not sure if that is still the plan or not. Maybe she or Julie will get a chance to respond and let us know.

Bramble,

Kathleen did a great job of answering your question. I'll just update this to let you know that we have firmly decided to schedule a 50 states study in the guide after RTR. It will be done independently 3 times weekly and be from a Christian perspective. :D The following year, we will schedule an individual state study. :D

Here is our reasoning on waiting to do this until the final two guides in our history cycle: :D

We've found with our oldest son that he retained much more of that type of study by doing it when he was older. We also love to give kiddos a chance to hear stories that give a historical perspective of our country and a feel for some of the states (through Beyond and Bigger) before entering into a more in-depth study of each state (in the middle school years). :D The 50 state study and the individual state studies also match very well with the historical time period that we'll be studying in the two guides after Resurrection to Reformation.

Blessings,
Carrie
