Doing 3 programs

Post by south5 » Thu Aug 19, 2010 12:10 pm

3 weeks into school and I am changing my oldest over to Preparing. I didn't want to buy a whole new curriculum so I kept what I had picked out, but he is so upset watching his sister and brother do fun stuff everyday while he sits with worksheets. I was hoping for 5th grade that he would do school by himself. So, we will be using LHTH, LHFHG and Preparing.

LHTH is awesome! My dd2 will start singing randomly "Ah-Ah-Adam" and she holds her hands up by her mouth. She also has the "B-B-B" down while rocking herself. I am taking about 1 1/2 weeks to do the Units.

LHFHG is so much fun too! My 6yo son loves Reddy Fox, and of course since we are in the south I over emphasize the southern accents of the animals. He just giggles whenever I say "Ol Mistah Buzzard."

So good to hear that your little ones are really enjoying their HOD programs! :D

I have to admit that I'm excited for your son! He's going to love all the new things he gets to do with HOD! We haven't done Preparing yet, but it looks like such a great program. Up until this year, we've used the textbook/workbook style curriculums. HOD is such a refreshing change for the better! My children love it. My older son (5th grade, too!) remarked the other day, that he's so glad that I switched companies for their school books. He says, "This year is so fun, I just love what I GET to learn!" And today, after listening to the audio track on the Diana Waring cd (part of CTC) he said, "Oh Mom, you and Dad have GOT to listen to this, it's so good! I can't wait to tell you what she talked about today!" :D

After a difficult year, last year, struggling with keeping good attitudes while they drudged their way through endless workbooks and dry material, it was such an amazing blessing to hear this! I pray that your son thoroughly enjoys his new school books, and enjoys doing all the fun and exciting things within HOD!! It's truly a great curriculum!

In Christ,

Lisa

That's funny. My son looked at me like I had two heads when we read Ol' Mistah Buzzard's lines. I'm quite sure he had absolutely no clue what I was talking about.

I'm also glad you mention the type of curriculum you switched your son over from. DH doesn't understand getting away from the traditional school model, and sometimes I've wondered if it would just be easier to go that route. It's good to know that you like HOD better. :D

Well, when I started homeschooling for 2nd grade with my oldest we used K12 for part of the year and then switched to some Christian Liberty Press things. For 3rd grade we used BF Early American and 4th we did WP CATW (for 3months) and finished the year using BF Geography and some books from SCM Module 6. I decided the CM style wasn't working for me because it didn't have enough directions. All of those programs are mainly history and I wasn't sure how to incorporate the entire Lifestyle. I was using Textbooks for Grammar, Spelling, Vocab, and Math. Well, I prayed about what to do this year and knew we needed to do Ancients. I looked at so many things and couldn't find Ancient for his grade level. I don't know why I worried about grade level! I ended up going Classical with MOH and tried Christian LIght for math and LA. It just wasn't fun at all for him. I am not too creative and don't know how to tweak that kind of curriculum to make it fun on my own.

Hooray! I'm glad he'll get to do PHFHG! :D If he's in fifth grade, he can do the Reading about History box reading himself, as well as the Storytime reading if he is a good reader. Then, you can just do the follow-up activities with him. CM suggested dc take on their own reading around at age 9 or as soon as they are able, as this promotes deeper learning and better retention. :D He should already be doing the science "I" independent box on his own too. I just thought I'd mention this as the reading out loud isn't necessary when they're able to do it on their own, and it takes our time when it needn't. :D

south5,

It sounds like your kiddos are really enjoying their year already! I'm so glad you're getting a chance to do LHTH and LHFHG. We have wonderful memories of those guides! :D I'll be doing LHTH with my fourth little guy this year.

I'm also thrilled that your 5th grader will get to do Preparing Hearts. That guide is such a blessing as you travel through it, cementing the skills and faith your son will need as he progresses into more independence in CTC. So, while Preparing will require some time to teach, it pays off big dividends in the future in independence in CTC on up!

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you Julie, it is a huge help to know how I should let him take over some things. I tend to go overboard or not enough.
Carrie, that is why I chose Preparing over CTC. I know that he needs the little extra foundation before moving on, but Preparing has 18 units of what we would have done in 36 weeks of Ancients. So, I feel like we are getting a lot of Ancients still.
Thank you!!
