Beyond storytime question

Post by jenntracy » Thu Aug 12, 2010 2:44 pm

We are starting with HF instead of Bigography for storytime in Beyond, so i am using Little HOuse in the Big Woods and using Units 9 -12 for the storytime questions.
My question is I really don't get how i am to apply the question about faith to this story. Is it supposed to be the whole story we have read so far or just the section for the day? It is question in Unit 10 , Day 4. It says how is the main character showing faith.....
can someone help me out?
Even last week when we got to the day with the faith question i had trouble and sorta made it work.
I read the 2 verses and explained what faith is from today's lesson, but i don't understand how to apply it to the story.

Thanks
Jenn

If you can make it work by using the section of the day, that's great. If not, I would use it as it applies to the story as a whole so far.

If this is not right, hopefully Julie or Carrie can help us both understand.

Jenn,

I think that when we've looked at the character quality of faith, we've looked to see what the main character is putting their faith in. Are they trusting in God? How can we tell? (mentioning prayer for guidance, telling of salvation, reading God's Word, God-honoring decisions) Or, even if the decisions are good/moral ones, do we know if the character is putting thier faith in God or themselves? (sometimes we haven't known for sure...and talk about how only God sees the heart and we can only guess what's going on in the heart of another) Or...is the character clearly putting their faith in themselves to try to make it on their own? Are they trusting in a friend, or an animal, or family, etc?

These definitely aren't one-right-answer questions! I'd do what Crystal said and think about what you just read, 1st. And then let them think about the book as a whole if it helps the discussion. We haven't actually done Beyond yet, but have had similar discussions in Bigger and DITHOR. We didn't really draw out the conversations either - but kept it short and sweet.

Sometimes my son came up with something I hadn't thought of. If we were thinking on it together, and it was kind of difficult to pinpoint something that really shows what they're putting their faith in, we'd give a couple of examples. And, I'd say, "Well, from this decision, it looks like ______ might be trusting in God, but he could just be doing what he thinks is best here and trusting himself. This reminds me that we can't see what's in someone's heart...only God can!" In your story, maybe there are times where Laura is putting her faith in Pa or Jack to protect her. You could mention those. I can't remember enough specifics in the book to help you out more. It may never mention Ma & Pa trusting in God. Does it look like they are trusting in their own hard work sometimes? Maybe you could talk about how we put our faith in different things, too. While I as the mom, put my faith in God - especially for eternity, but for every-day stuff as well. I also put my faith in the decisions that my husband makes for our family and his hard work to provide for our family. This lets me stay home and homeschool and not get a different job right now. Your daughter is trusting you to provide for her - and she should as you're the parents God has given her. But she should be trusting God most of all - knowing that He is the One in total Control!

Hope this helps!
