We start LHFHG tomorrow!!!!! Question about storytime
We start LHFHG tomorrow!!!!! Question about storytime
Although I am sad to see summer coming to an end, I'm so excited that we can finally begin HOD.
I just have one question about storytime. I anticipate my dd wanting me to read more than one chapter a day sometimes. Does that mess up the flow? I have actually been looking ahead to Beyond. There are different sets of books for storytime to choose from. I like the classic set AND the girls set. If we read ahead in the LHFHG storytime books, would it be feasible to begin a set from Beyond when we finish the Burgess books, even though we will technically still be in LHFHG? Then we could do the other set next year when we are in Beyond. Does that make sense? I like having a guide, so I would follow whatever Beyond has for storytime, once we got to that point. Or, would that be too much? DD loves being read to.

Re: We start LHFHG tomorrow!!!!! Question about storytime
I haven't done LHFHG, but I have seen this question asked before about storytime in different guides and I know Carrie recommends sticking with the schedule. The philosophy of Charlotte Mason is to savor a book and not read too much at a time. She purposefully makes it where you read through the book slowly. I really wouldn't read more than what is scheduled. If you wanted to do one of the other sets in Beyond that you won't be using maybe make it a bed time read aloud?

Re: We start LHFHG tomorrow!!!!! Question about storytime
Hi,
We did LHFHG last year, and I agree with the previous post. We tried to stick with one chapter a day, even when I was begged to keep going. It gave my kids something to look forward to the next day and we were able to sort of savor each chapter by using the questions/discussions/activities that Carrie has laid out in the storytime box. But...thats just my opinion/experience!
By the way, we absolutely loved the storytime books in LHFHG. We still talk about Jumpy Squirrel when we see the squirrels outside, and it made my children pay more attention to what they see when they look out the windows.

Just like Amy and her family, we still talk about "Reddy Fox" (he lives in our neighborhood as far as the kids are concerned) and the laughing brook and it has been almost 3 years ago that we did LHFHG with oldest ds.

We are about to start it soon with middle ds and I am so looking forward to it.

It amazes me at how well the kiddo's do when they are left in suspense and eager to hear the rest of the story the next day! How well my ds remembered where we left off and how they learn to focus in on the details when you only read 1 chapter.

We have learned to stick with Carrie's recommendations, for the speed of doing things and the kiddo's enjoy school so much more

Hope you will enjoy LHFHG as well as we do!

Re: We start LHFHG tomorrow!!!!! Question about storytime
Thanks for all the input. I can understand the benefit of doing just one chapter. We will just stick to the schedule. DD needs to learn patience.
I'm not going to start any Beyond books while we are doing LHFHG. I'll decide about those storytime sets when the time comes. It was just an idea. Thanks for keeping me on track.
I guess I'm too anxious. I do want dd to really take in the information from each day of HOD. 'Little bites' is one of the Charlotte Mason philosophies that caught my attention to begin with. I know dd will learn so much better this way. Well, I need to get her to bed, so she will be rested for her first day of school. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Re: We start LHFHG tomorrow!!!!! Question about storytime
We actually got behind in storytime at times. And it didn't effect the flow of things when that happened.
We also tried to do 1 chapter a day.
If you do happen to get ahead, just pick another book for fun storytime.
Since we did LHFHG with my son half-speed, we did the story-time books for the 1st year and the next year we did the History side but added more Thornton Burgess books and i just had him narrate a little. We also read a lovely classic book that Australian children read. It was hard to find but i find it used at a great price.
I am starting my 2nd child with LHFHG today and look forward to reading Reddy Fox again.

Re: We start LHFHG tomorrow!!!!! Question about storytime
My boys loved LHFHG Storytime and we stuck with Carrie's schedule. There are soooo many good books to choose from for Beyond's Storytime, so I chose two from each genre. We are reading through the summer and we'll continue through the 2010-2011 school year and probably finish next summer. You can easily go through Beyond's Storytime discussions/activities more than once.

Re: We start LHFHG tomorrow!!!!! Question about storytime
During "school time" we only read what was scheduled in the Teacher's Manual and stayed on course through the entire program. But, we did read other read-alouds while having tea in the afternoons or at bed-time.
